With filming on the action-comedy/parody set to start very soon (at least according to this report), the “MacGruber” movie is now casting, with big names Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer (okay, not that big names — have either of these guys had a hit in the last decade?) currently in talks to fight alongside MacGrube. Well, one of them will, the other will be a bad guy. The duo will be joining Will Forte and Kristen Wiig, who will be reprising their roles as MacGruber and his useless female companion, respectively, on the big-screen adaptation of the SNL skit.
According to THR, the movie will see MacGruber being pulled out of retirement as a monk in Ecuador (where else?) to stop an evil villain name Cunth. Why is Cunth (set to be played by Val Kilmer) evil? Well for one he has a nuclear warhead, and being evil, he’s probably planning something evil with it. Also, Cunth killed MacGruber’s bride, which is not a good way to make friends.
With Kilmer as the villain, Phillippe would a young Army officer name Piper who is forced to team up with MacGruber to stop Cunth and his nefarious plans for global domination or some such. Hilary, as they say, potentially ensues.
“MacGruber” will be directed by Jorma Taccone, one of the skit’s creators and writers, and who will be making his feature-film debut. One can only hope MacGruber is funny for 90 minutes. If not, well, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise, would it? Movies based on SNL skits are notoriously hit and miss.
Lorne Michaels, as he does all his SNL skits-turned-movies, will produce.
