Well this is disappointing. It seems Prachya Pinkaew’s English-language debut, the actioner “Elephant White” is going straight-to-DVD in the States. The film currently has a May 17, 2011 released date and is now up for pre-order at Amazon.com on DVD and Blu-ray. The poster and box art are also out, but there is no trailer to speak off yet. We do know more about the film’s plot, though.
Mercenary Curtie Church (Djimon Hounsou, ”Blood Diamond”) is hired to take out a notorious Thai sex-trafficking gang by a father’s whose daughter was kidnapped and murdered by the gang. With the help of a ruthless weapons dealer (Kevin Bacon, ”Mystic River”), Church finds the men he is hired to kill. But what starts as a paying job turns into an outright war between two rival gangs, and Church finds himself caught between the corrupt world that surrounds him and the truth behind the man who hired him.
That sounds like a revenge film along the lines of “Man on Fire” or the recent “The Man from Nowhere” from South Korea.
Prachya Pinkaew, of course, is the director of the “Ong Bak” films, so you can expect some nice bone-crunching action. Or at least, as “bone-crunching” as you can get with a Western cast that, most likely, had to be insured for the movie.
