Actress Robin Wright, or Princess Buttercup as she’ll always be known to me, has joined the cast of “The American” director Anton Corbijn’s spy thriller “A Most Wanted Man”. The film, based on a John le Carre novel, will revolve around a Chechnian Muslim who illegally immigrates to Hamburg, Germany, where he gets caught up in the international war on terror while attempting to locate a fortune left behind by his father.
Oh dear, I suspect I know where this is headed. Muslim? War on Terror?
No word on what character Wright will play in the film, but she joins the previously cast Philip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel McAdams. Hoffman is playing the chief of a covert German spy unit who works to solve the mystery of the man’s identity, while McAdams is a woman who becomes involved in the international intrigue.
Le Carre, one of the old guard of spy novelists, has joined fellow spy writer Robert Ludlum (of “The Bourne Identity” fame) i having their works adapted for the big screen. Last year saw “Tinker Tailor Solder Spy” starring Gary Oldman, and back in 2005, Rachel Weisz starred in “The Constant Gardener”, another le Carre novel.
“A Most Wanted Man” is expected to shoot next month on location in Germany.
