Prom Night Remake Slices and Dices the Box Office

Prom Night (Remake, 2008) Movie, Street Kings (2008) Movie — By Nix on April 13, 2008 Share/Bookmark

I’m not surprised that “Prom Night” took the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend in its debut, but color he shock and awed that it took in a whopping $22.7 million. Even more surprising is just how badly the teen horror remake crushed Keanu Reeves’ cop thriller “Street Kings”, which despite its star power (or lack thereof, perhaps?), only took in $12 million, good enough for second place, but just barely edging out the previous two weeks’ reigning champ, the blackjack caper “21″. The true story Vegas thriller, about MIT students who plot to break the casinos, continues its impressive run at #3 with $11 million, bringing it’s 3-week total to $62.3 million.

Here’s how the rest of the box office broke down over the weekend (via):

1. “Prom Night,” $22.7 million.

2. “Street Kings,” $12 million.

3. “21,” $11 million.

4. “Nim’s Island,” $9 million.

5. “Leatherheads,” $6.2 million.

6. “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!”, $6 million.

7. “Smart People,” $4.2 million.

8. “The Ruins,” $3.3 million.

9. “Superhero Movie,” $3.1 million.

10. “Drillbit Taylor,” $2.1 million.

So what have we learned today, kids?

Teen + Horror + Prom = Cha-ching. That, and teens still love slasher flicks.
