(Article by Tom G.) When I first saw Jonah Hill in The 40 Year Old Virgin, playing a slightly freaky guy trying to buy disco boots, I had absolutely no idea that there was a future for him as a leading man. But then again the same could have been said for Seth Rogen and many other Judd Apatow familiars.
But with Superbad coming out this August, and Judd Apatow slowly getting revenge for the cancellations of two of the best teen comedies ever, it seems like the most unlikeliest of stars are getting their shots at the big time.
In an interview with MTV Movies Blog (probably the only area on MTV.com which won’t rot your brain), Jonah Hill mentions a new project which he hopes to move into production next year called Pure Imagination. Here is the plot as described by Hill:
“Basically, I go through a bunch of traumatic stuff, and I develop an imaginary friend. Then what happens is I meet a girl, and we start dating…but the problem is I don’t know whether she [actually] exists [or] whether she’s a figment of my imagination… It’s basically a relationship movie, but the whole time I’m trying to avoid finding out whether she’s real or not… I don’t want to know, basically. And then, my best friend who I go to for advice, is an imaginary person that I’ve made up in my mind.”
OK, so it’s not the most detailed plot description, but already this concept sounds amazing to me. In times where romantic comedies are becoming redundant and painfully formulaic, an idea like this is perfect, and in the hands of Apatow and Hill, I’m expecting great things. It sounds wonderfully surreal and also slightly dark…I’m highly curious how the main character will ‘test’ if the girl is real or not. I can’t wait!
