Quickie Update: No Eyepatch Waiting for Jeremy Renner

Last week we reported that Jeremy Renner was “close” to nabbing the role of Snake Plissken in “The Crazies” director Breck Eisner’s remake of “Escape from New York”.

The Wrap has an update: No deal. They say Renner isn’t close to landing the role as previously reported, and no offer has been extended. The reboot is still in its early stages, though the possibility that New Line may extend the offer to Renner down the line remains.

(Especially if “Mission Impossible 4″ proves to be a real big hit for Renner…)

So, the search for Plissken continues…

I like Renner but I think that he is too old to play Snake. When Kurt Russell played him he was 30 years old. Renner is almost 40! I really hope that they cast a younger, lesser known actor for the part. However the actor will have to be really good, the entire success of the film will land solely on the lead.

I think Josh Brolin would be PERFECT as Snake Plissken, even though he’s 42, I don’t think age is that big a factor. I mean, Stallone and Willis proved you can be pushing 60 and still kick ass. Plus, Brolin has that badassery that I think would translate across well.

I have to wonder what period the remake will be set in. If it’s 1997 as in the original, then we’ll get an “analogpunk” alternate history/reality story which might be cool. But if a remake is going in that direction, I’d rather a Snake Plisskin origin story; there were references to a Nevada Bob and Plisskin’s time in Siberia in the original. Great, let’s see that, then at the end throw in the aborted train escape from the deleted scenes of the original as a finale. And Hideo Kojima can make the tie-in videogame featuring Iriquois Plisskin

I think Renner woulda done well. I don’t think that every hero needs to be in their 20-somethings. A grizzled older look works better for the character in my opinion. That said I agree with you Dom! Brolin would do alright as Snake as well. Also @ErickKwon I think it should be updated and moved forward, taking place in like 2020. Only ten years down the line. Definitely keep the aborted train scene though.
