Randall Wallace to Direct The Arcanum
The Arcanum (2009) Movie — By Nix on October 23, 2007
We haven’t seen much from Randall Wallace since his 2002 Vietnam War movie “We Were Soldiers”, a film I really liked. In 1998, Wallace directed “The Man in the Iron Mask”, a film that was slightly bloated but, well, I still kinda liked it anyway. Word is that Wallace, who was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay for “Braveheart”, has landed the gig to direct “The Arcanum”, based on the fantasy novel by Thomas Wheeler. The story is actually pretty interesting, and reminds me a lot (if not a tad too much?) of the “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” graphic novels by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, which was itself already made into a 2003 movie of the same name.

Adapted from Wheeler’s debut novel, the 1919-set story follows Arthur Conan Doyle as he leads a secret society known as the Arcanum — whose members include magician Harry Houdini, voodoo priestess Marie Laveau and horror writer H.P. Lovecraft — against a powerful supernatural force that threatens the world. Wheeler is doing a production polish before going out to cast.
Great idea for a movie, just as, well, LXG was. Hopefully this one will be better, or at the very least, less despised like Stephen Norrington’s LXG movie.
