Red Band Trailer for Hell Baby Will Punch Your Demon Infant in the Face

If “Hell Baby” had been assembed by anyone else, I’d probably hate it with a passion. But there’s something about directors Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon’s upcoming horror/comedy that tickles my funny bone. And while the jokes might be a little old — horny priests have been done to death — I still find the new red band trailer to be weirdly charming. Then again, I also laugh when people die after eating too many hard-boiled eggs. Make of that what you will.

However, the number of horror/comedies looming on the horizon is a little crazy right now. Once upon a time I thought the subgenre was being unfairly ignored. Now I’m just hoping somebody does something that actually blends horror and comedy. “Hell Baby” definitely looks like a step in the right direction. We shall see.

A lengthy synopsis? Why, sure:

Jack and Vanessa are an expectant couple that moves into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans — a house with a deadly demonic curse. Things soon spiral out of control for Jack and Vanessa, as well as their-not-so-helpful neighbor F’Resnel, Vanessa’s friendly psychiatrist, Vanessa’s Wiccan sister Marjorie and the detectives assigned to look into the rising body count. Only the Vatican’s elite exorcism team can save them — or can they?

“Hell Baby” sports quite a few funny individuals, including Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Thomas Lennon, Riki Lindhome, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Keegan Michael Key, Kumail Nanjiani, Robert Ben Garant, and Michael Ian Black. Some of them are funnier than others, but they’re all amusing in their own weird way.

The flick opens in select theaters on September 3.
