Rejoice, Fanboys: Marvel Confirms Joss Whedon Will Write and Direct The Avengers Sequel … and More

The Avengers Movie LogoIn case you were concern that Joss Whedon, the mastermind behind Marvel’s gazillion dollar hit “The Avengers” this Summer, might not return for the sequel, you can stop being concern now. He will definitely be back, according to Marvel themselves in an official statement, which reads thusly:

Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Did you get that? Not only will Whedon write and direct the big-screen “The Avengers 2″, but he’ll also be involved in that “The Avengers” TV series that we previously reported on. Back then, we heard the TV series was just in the “talking” stage, but it looks like it’s gone beyond that and into reality.

And that last part is also interesting:

He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

I wonder what that means? I think it’s a no-brainer that Whedon’s “The Avengers 2″ will have a major impact on the Marvel cinematic universe. Well, every Marvel movie has an impact, that’s one of their charms, but “The Avengers” is the franchise after this Summer, so its impact, I suspect, will be felt even more so than any other movie in the studio’s stable.

But after that? Who knows. If Marvel treats him well, I would think Whedon might be interested in staying on and “helping” out with other titles.

Sounds ideal, but then I remember the pissing contest between Jon Favreau and Marvel when he was questionable for “Iron Man 2″, the much rejoicing when he signed on again, and the much anger on my part when it kind of blew and found out the studio screwed with him big time. But then again, “The Avengers” is the tent-pole of tent-poles for Marvel so this may be a case where Marvel knows Whedon is ideal for this and hopefully leave him be for the most part

hopefully less plot holes in next avengers, and much better stories if possible.

Whedon is returning as writer/director and it seems like most were satisfied with the first one. I wouldn’t expect anything more ambitious from the sequel; it will probably be another mindless action/comedy.

  • Juggernaut

Great news IMO! Avengers was excellent and I’m sure that Whedon will deliver once again. I’m really exited to see where the phase two takes the story and characters leading into the sequel and even more curious to see what new characters will be added. Can’t wait!!!

Agreed! A friend and I were discussing this last night, and the dieal set up we came up with would be Thor2, Iron Man 3 and Cap 2 all having end credits sequences featuring Thanos looking for or finding an infinity gem. Guardians of the Galaxy chronicling what happened to Thanos after Avnegers and before the cameos. A2 would be Ultron or something, Thor 3, IM4 and Cap 3 Having more cameos leading into a GoG2 and A3 crossover with Thanos and the gauntlet.

      • Juggernaut

That would be the best route. However, I doubt that Marvel Studios and most fans will have the same patience as you, your friends and I. That would be four years since having first teased Thanos! I agree that they should pace themselves and do as Whedon himself put it, “a more personal story.” for A2. Ultron would be that story IMO. Having an Ant-Man movie in between now and the release of the Avengers sequel would be a perfect opportunity to introduce Ultron as the main villain for A2. Do I hope that happens? Yes. Do I think that will happen? No.

        • Dedpool

Agreed! The Antman film would be the perfect set up for him showing up in A2. Have Fury show up at the end saying they want him back at S.H.I.E.L.D.

  • Juggernaut

I assume that the last part about Whedon being invlved in the Marvel cinematic universe would be more on the lines of the films leading into Avengers 2 (Ironman 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians Of The Galaxy, etc.)

    • Dedpool

I kinda took it as him being like the Nolan of the Marvel Universes’ films, where he will produce and help with the connective tissue of the films.

      • Juggernaut

That is what I thought as well. Same for Favreau.

        • Dedpool

Agreed! Favs and Whedon together with Avi Arad as supreme overseer and we’re in good hands!

          • Juggernaut

I thought that Arad was handling all of the properties owned by other companies (FOX, Sony, etc.) with Kevin Feige handling the Marvel Studios aspect.

          • Dedpool

            Oh yeah my bad!!

  • Lexavi80

“He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe” means that, most likely, he’ll draw some outlines for Ironman, Thor, Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy that clash in Avengers II.

I mean, they all must be tied-in somehow, right?

hey, guys, how about focusing on other projects like MACHINE MAN, SHE HULK, RED SONJA, SPIDER-WOMAN, BLACK GOLIATH (have that issue!), POWER PACK, X FACTOR, FORCE,
CAPTAIN MARVEL (also have that in my box) and MS. MARVEL for the silver screen instead?

  • Juggernaut

I could see Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel showing up in some capacity as cameos on supporting cast in the next wave of movies. There was a rumor going around of a Power Pack tv series too. Conan’s not so stellar reception will undoubtably sideline a Red Sonja film. X-Force and X-Factor are more than likely controlled by Fox, although there was talk recently of expanding the X characters so that may be a possibility. As for Machine Man I really can’t see that happening then again I said the same about Guardians Of The Galaxy too so ya’ never know.
