So are they making this thing or not? From a purely business standpoint, it doesn’t make sense that they wouldn’t, considering that all three films did pretty well at the box office, and the last film, “Extinction”, scored the most money out of the three. It seems as if the franchise is picking up steam, so why stop now? Paul W.S. Anderson certainly seems interested in returning, if just to produce, and now comes word from STYD that, indeed, Sony is inclined to make it happen.
STYD has no quotes, just that someone has apparently seen an “internal memo” floating through the studio that says they want the movie in theaters by September 17, 2010.
To be honest with you, I don’t see this movie not happening. It just makes perfect sense from the business side of things. And in any case, the third movie left the door wide open for a sequel: it could either continue to follow Alice (Milla Jovovich), which would be the safe choice, or it could decide to follow Ali Larter’s Claire Redfield, which would be riskier. If it’s all business, the fourth movie (tentatively titled “Resident Evil: Aftermath”) will continue following Alice.
In any case, time will tell if Sony gets what it wants, and if Anderson and Jovovich will return for their respective parts.
