Less than two days ago the world learned that Rhys Ifans had been cast as the villain in Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot for Sony, but no one knew what villain he would be playing. Until today.
The Wrap reports that Ifans will be playing Curt Connors, Peter Parker’s college professor who eventually becomes the villain known as The Lizard. Of course, since Webb’s “Spider-Man” is a reboot that will return Parker to his High School days, chances are they’ll also retcon Connors into Parker’s high school science teacher, or something of that nature.
In the comics, Connors was a one-armed scientist whose experiments in limb regeneration eventually led him to becoming the Lizard. Dylan Baker originally played the character in the Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” movies, but he’s a bit older than Ifans. Since they’re rebooting everyone, including the hero, I suppose it makes sense they would make the villains younger, too.
Andrew Garfield will play Peter Parker aka Spiderman, with Emma Stone as his love interest, Gwen Stacy. Mary Jane Watson is expected to take over love interest work by the end of Webb’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, but for now it’s Peter and Gwen.
“Spider-Man” in 3D swings into theaters July 3, 2012.
