Granted, 1992’s “The Bodyguard” was not the best movie ever made, but it was still good and I still liked it, so what of it? Late last year Kevin Costner made noise about a possible sequel to his hit film. The idea, said Costner, would be to bring back his bodyguard character Frank Farmer, minus the singing diva. But what if Frank Farmer did come back but Costner didn’t, and instead you got Duke from “G.I. Joe” and “Step it Up” in his place and Rihanna filling in for Whitney Houston?
That’s the rumor from the NYDailyNews:
Rihanna may get a bodygaurd – on the big screen.
The battered pop star made an impromptu trip to the Big Apple over the weekend to have some meetings about impending projects: one of which is a proposed remake of 1992’s Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner flick, “The Bodyguard.” Rihanna would be taking on Whitney’s role in the updated version, which an insider says would be a “young and sexy take” on the favorite film. “GI Joe” hottie Channing Tatum’s name has been bandied about to take on Costner’s role.
For you gossip hounds out there, you know that Rihanna playing an abused singer on the big screen who needs a bodyguard is the reason why people made up the phrase “art imitating life.” That, and the word irony.
In any case, a remake/reboot instead of a sequel to “The Bodyguard”? I don’t know, I guess it could work. I would have preferred a sequel myself with Costner as Frank Farmer, but I’m probably the only one.
