Coming off his turn as English Detective Sherlock Holmes and billionaire playboy/superhero Iron Man, Downey Jr. has teamed up with Warner Bros. to bring Erle Stanley Gardner’s creation to the big screen as a potential movie franchise, with Downey Jr., of course, playing the lead, reports Variety. Also along for the ride will be Mason’s secretary, Della Street, private investigator Paul Drake, and Mason’s longtime courtroom nemesis, Hamilton Burger.
Gardner wrote a whopping 82 novels and short stories based on the character, a defense attorney who can usually be found defending an innocent accused of murder. The character was most famously adapted into a long-running TV show starring Raymond Burr, which resurfaced in the ’80s as a series of original made-for-TV movies.
The project is still in the early stages, but Downey Jr. and David Gambino are currently in search of a screenwriter to write a script based on an original story starring the Perry Mason character that the producing duo have come up with.
