In a recent visit to the Late Show with David Letterman, Robert Downey Jr. played around (hopefully) with the idea that, in a possible sequel, Holmes and Watson may be more than just good buddies, perhaps suggesting another kind of game might be afoot. Downey says that Holmes is maybe a “very butch homosexual”.
He was probably just kidding, but Andrea Plunket, the keeper of the U.S. copyright for Holmes and Co. had this over reactive response:
“I hope this is just an example of Mr Downey’s black sense of humour,” she says. “It would be drastic, but I would withdraw permission for more films to be made if they feel that is a theme they wish to bring out in the future.
“I am not hostile to homosexuals, but I am to anyone who is not true to the spirit of the books.”
Isn’t going to happen Ms. Plunket. Relax. Thanks again Totalfilm.
