When I think big-time comic book Summer movies, I don’t usually think Robert Redford, the Sundance Kid himself. Sure, he made his bones as a studio guy, but that was a while back and now he’s more known as the guy who founded the Sundance Film Festival, a place where Marvel films would never get a showing in a million years.
But yup, it’s true, kids, the trades have Redford currently “in talks” to play a major character in the SHIELD spy organization currently run by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in Marvel’s upcoming “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, their sequel to the 2011 hit. SHIELD will have a big role in the film, since they were the ones who brought the Captain out of his beauty sleep in the first place, and have always been the ones pulling his strings, all the way through “The Avengers”.
Plot details for the sequel aren’t confirmed, but it’s expected that, given the title, “The Winter Soldier” will find the good Captain having to deal with a newly resurrected Bucky (Sebastian Stan), who has since gotten a new personality since we last saw him plunging to his death in the first movie.
Emily VanCamp (ABC’s “Revenge”) was previously cast as Captain America’s new love interest.
Joe and Anthony Russo are scheduled to direct the “Captain America” sequel from a script by writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The comic book sequel is currently set for an April 4, 2014 release date.
