Robots And Monsters Duke It Out In The First Pacific Rim Trailer

You had me at giant monsters fighting giant robots. Anything beyond that is just frosting on the badass sci-fi cake that is Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim”. And if this first trailer for the film is to be believed, there is going to be a damn lot to sink our teeth into with this bad boy.

The concept is simple, monsters show up, wreck up the joint, and people develop giant, mechanical, human-piloted suits (think a more high tech “Robot Jox”) in order to combat them. Here’s the official synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

If this trailer doesn’t make you stand up and cheer, or at least start drooling a little bit, I’m not sure we can be friends anymore. The more we see and hear about “Pacific Rim”, the better it looks. My already inflated expectations are practically ballooning out of control after this video.

“Pacific Rim” stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ron Perlman, and stomps into theaters July 12, 2013.

And the crazy twist is, they’re all actually just characters on a crazy Japanese monster movie! (Wait, this is directed by M. Night Shyamalan, right…?)

    • http://twitter.com/BrentMMcKnight Brent McKnight

I just assumed that they were all just figments of a crazed fever dream.

    • ErickKwon

      TWIST!!

      • http://twitter.com/BrentMMcKnight Brent McKnight

It’d be way better than the little kid with the snow globe at the end of St. Elsewhere.

        • ErickKwon

I kind of love that ending because it technically undid so many sitcom realities. If the internet had been around in 1988, it would’ve blown up with timelines and venn diagrams explaining it all away

          • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Nix

No doubt. The Internet, cellphones, etc makes a lot of pre-2000 movies almost impossible now in terms of plotting.

“You had me at giant monsters fighting giant robots.”

And Fuckin’ Giant Robot Rocket Punch sealed the deal

    • http://twitter.com/BrentMMcKnight Brent McKnight

Seriously. It’s like a suped up Robot Jox, but instead of the Russians, they’re fighting GIANT F’N MONSTERS! It’s like they raided my childhood psyche and made a movie about it.

      • ErickKwon

Bonus: it also means we won’t end up with a lousy fist fight on a “Star Trek: TNG” reject set as a finale

The trailer was nice – really liked it…but am I the onle person hearin GlaDoS from Portal (game) as the computerized voice?

    • http://twitter.com/BrentMMcKnight Brent McKnight

I read a comment somewhere else that said the same thing. I’m not familiar with the game, but if other people are having the same thought, you might be onto something.

      • LionHeart

It’s most definitely Ellen McLain, the voice actor behind GLaDOS. It was announced at NYCC.

Almost kind of jarring in the trailer, actually, since I kept expecting a sarcastic quip. >_>

The fact that they have to stand while controlling their ‘bots would seem to make controlling one of these things for long periods somewhat uncomfortable, no?

    • http://twitter.com/BrentMMcKnight Brent McKnight

Especially because it looks like they’re strapped to an eliptical machine.

Gotta be in shape to be a Jaeger pilot!

    • Juggernaut

If being a gian t robot pilot was easy everyone would do it.

      • LionHeart

Indeed, otherwise we’d have kids with daddy issues trying to jump in a mech and save the world.

        >_>

    • X_p

na uh theyre in a virtual gravity stasis, theyre no more atletic than football players… i think haha

  • Juggernaut

That was extremely bad ass! Idris Elba is a mutha f**kin’ boss!!! Can’t wait for this!

  • Lexavi80

Not sure what to think about this movie yet. What I saw is something I’ve seen for years in Michael Bay’s films.

I like Del Toro, but I’m still doubtful about it.

    • X_p

thats whats cool about this. del Toro is like Bay only with more and dare i say better imagination

    • Aegon the Conqueror

Yeah I dunno if it was the horror of the last Transformers film, but I also got a negative knee jerk reaction to this.

      • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

I liked Dark of the Moon. At least morso than Fallen!!! And this looks nothing like Transformers except for the robots. The thing is the trailer concentrates on them as to not ruin the surprise of what the monsters will look like. So we got nothing but shots of the robots. Definitely not going to be a Bayfest!

        • Aegon the Conqueror

I liked the previous shoddy emergency broadcast one, didn’t know there would be robots. This looks like a mix of Transformers vs Beast Wars.

          • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

Didn’t know there’d be robots? I take it you haven’t been following the film at all. It’s been part of the synopsis from the get go. And no it looks like Transformers vs Godzilla and crew. I want an Evangelion movie now!!

  • Juggernaut

I cannot stop watching this trailer. So cool! The Cthulla mytho-esque backstory is really cool too. Can’t wait!

  • Juggernaut

Okay, I was sure that by now someone would have created a fan made trailer for X-Men: Days Of Future Past using footage from this trailer for the Sentinels. I’d do it myself if I had the time and skills. Someone, anyone, make this happen! Please?

    • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

Not a bad idea really, but I don;t know how well that would work. It’d have to be very very well put together.

  • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

    I repeat EVANGELION MOVIE NOWWW!!!!!!
