Romero’s Dawn of the Dead is Back in 3D — and a Sequel?

The horror fiends over at Fangoria has a couple of very interesting news tidbits concerning George Romero’s original “Dawn of the Dead” movie. The news comes from the mouth of producer Richard Rubinstein, who informs them that they’re planning a re-release of Romero’s original 1979 “Dawn of the Dead” — in 3-D! Yes, 3-D. They say converting the movie to the new format will be done in 2009. And oh yeah — Rubinstein also drops the shocker that they’re planning a direct sequel to “Dawn of the Dead” — no, not the Zack Snyder remake, but the original.

Here’s Fangoria with the bits and chunks:

Rubinstein, the man responsible for producing many of Romero’s films as well as the 2004 DAWN remake, is planning to rerelease the 1979 zombie epic in true 3-D! In-Three, Inc. of Agoura Hill, CA will be responsible for the “dimensionalization” process.

…Rubinstein also has plans to create a direct sequel to the original DAWN (!)…

Wow. A sequel to the original “Dawn of the Dead”? I’m a bit surprised to hear that. Now I wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of the 2004 Snyder remake, but over the years, I’ve come to appreciate it as a separate movie entirely from Romero’s “Dead” films, and you know what, it ain’t all bad. What I’m saying is, why not just do a sequel to Snyder’s “Dead” instead of going back to Romero’s version?

Or maybe Rubinstein was talking about a sequel to the new version and not the old one, and Fangoria just got it wrong? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

Now, that is awesome on both fronts. I felt “Land of the Dead” fell short in some ways, so maybe a direct sequel to “Dawn” will be great.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) is without a doubt my ALL TIME fave movie. I love everything about it from the in story survival tactics to the fly by night film production to the bright red blood.

To see it 3D would be an event to say the least. However I’ll believe it when I see it. And a sequal makes no sense on any level-whatsoever.
