It’s official: David Fincher’s remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” has found its titular girl with the dragon tattoo, and it’s Rooney Mara, last seen fleeing a disfigured Freddy in the “Nightmare on Elm Street” reboot. (She’s also the little sister of Kate Mara of “Shooter” fame, FYI.)
Mara will play the character Lisbeth Salander, a computer hacker and social outcast who spends her time trying to get back at society’s evil men and solving an old murder case with disgraced reporter Mikael Blomkvist (to be played by Daniel Craig). She joins a cast that also includes Robin Wright as Blomkvist’s lover and Stellan Skarsgard as one of the murder suspects.
If all goes well, “Dragon Tattoo” will be followed by two more movies, “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest”, though that’s highly unlikely. All three original films did well overseas, but they didn’t make much of a dent Stateside, and it’s doubtful the remake will change that. “Dragon Tattoo” is a pretty gritty crime thriller, but I don’t see a whole lot of commercial potential for it, and I doubt if the overseas markets will be lining up to see what is sounding suspiciously like the exact same movie all over again.
The plan is to start shooting the crime thriller this fall in Sweden.
