What do you get when you mix the worlds of killer whale researchers with illegal backyard fighting? The answer is “Rust & Bone”, the new film from “Un Prophete” director Jacques Audiard. The movie garnered rave reviews when it premiered at Cannes this year, and now you can check out a new UK trailer.

There is no dialogue in this video, just an instrumental M83 song, but what it lacks in story, it certainly makes up for in atmosphere and mood. “Rust & Bone” tells the tale of a friendship between a woman (Marion Cotillard) who works at a marine park and loses her legs in a freak accident, and a single father (Matthias Schoenaerts) who pummels other men into dust in order to provide for his son.

This is a film that I’ve been waiting for since I first saw “Un Prophete” a couple of years ago. That film takes gangster and prison stories and plays with the formulas, resulting in a stunning, powerful film. “Rust & Bone” looks to take a similar approach to a romantic picture. And you couldn’t ask for a better leading duo. Cotillard is fantastic, and finally getting the recognition she deserves in the states. If you haven’t seen “Bullhead” yet, you should. Schoenarts has a quiet menace and deep, wounded soul in that movie that will stick with you and haunt you for days.

“Rust & Bone” opens stateside on November 16, 2012.
