After the Festival de Cannes last month, the entire critical world, at least the ones who saw it in France, took a collective shit on “Only God Forgives,” the latest team up from “Drive” collaborators Ryan Gosling and Nicholas Winding Refn. Not having seen the film yet, I can’t speak to the reaction of others, but this is still high on my list of anticipated movies, and this new trailer does nothing to dissuade me.
From all appearances, “Only God Forgives” features a similar aesthetic to “Drive,” a quiet, deliberate pace, punctuated by troubled relationships and moments of explosive violence. This new video comes hot on the heels of a new collection of character posters.
Here’s a synopsis:
Julian (Gosling), a respected figure in the criminal underworld of Bangkok, runs a Thai boxing club and smuggling ring with his brother Billy. Billy is suddenly murdered and their crime lord matriarch, Crystal arrives from London to bring back the body. When Jenna forces Julian to settle the score with his brother’s killers, Julian finds himself in the ultimate showdown.
“Only God Forgives” also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Yayaying Rhatha Phongam, and Vithaya Pansringarm. We’ll have to wait until July 19 to see this and judge for ourselves, but between this bleak, sparse trailer, and the handful of positive reviews, I’m in until proven otherwise.
