Here’s the first trailer for “Safe House”, in which Denzel Washington teaches Ryan Reynolds what it means to be a badass CIA guy. Except Washington’s character is a former badass CIA guy, so I guess now he’s just a badass guy. Ryan Reynolds is a hopelessly hapless CIA trainee or noob or some such (albeit one with a very hot girlfriend). In any case, bad guys attack their safe house, things blow up real good early and often, and the clueless and evil CIA does clueless and evil things from shiny, high-tech war rooms. It all looks very generic and predictable, but hopefully the big-budget Hollywood gloss and A-list cast will give us something we haven’t seen before. Ain’t holding my breath, though. The rap soundtrack is cool, though.
Washington plays the most dangerous renegade from the CIA, who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. When the South African safe house he’s remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds) escapes with him. Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead.
Starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Vera Farmiga, Fares Fares, Robert Patrick, Nora Arnezeder, Liam Cunningham, Joel Kinnaman, Ruben Blades and directed by Daniel Espinosa.
King Kong ain’t got nothing on Denzel February 10, 2012.
