Sam Jackson Not Playing Nick Fury? Say It Ain’t So, Marvel!
Comic Book Movie News, Iron Man 2 (2010) Movie, The Avengers (2012) Movie, The First Avenger: Captain America (2011) Movie — By Nix on January 14, 2009
It looks like Marvel Studios is having something of a tiff with yet another one of their stars over moolah. This time it’s Samuel L. Jackson, who played Nick Fury at the end of “Iron Man”, and has been promised to the fanboys (much to their pants-pissing glee) as a major castmember in three upcoming Marvel movies: “Iron Man 2″, “The First Avenger: Captain America”, and of course, the biggest movie of 2011 without a doubt, “The Avengers”. So what’s the diddly yo on the man’s money? Apparently Marvel is tightening the purses. Either that, or they’re really, really bad at using the public as a negotiation tool. Jackson doesn’t seem to have that problem.
Says the baddest mofo of them all on the situation of his contract negotiation to the LA Times:
“I saw ['Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2' director] Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation. He said, ‘I hope things are working out for you because we’re writing stuff for you.’ Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren’t really working that well.
There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don’t know. Maybe I won’t be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won’t be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], ‘We’re not making that deal.’”
Oh Marvel, what are you doing? First you dump Terrence Howard because you didn’t want to pay him his money (okay, so you swapped him with Don Cheadle, which I guess ain’t so bad), then you almost lost Jon Favreau by not wanting to pay him his money, and now you may lose Samuel L. Jackson because you may not want to pay him his money? Who is running this company, Scrooge McNumbnutshead? Seriously, guys, whatever you’re going to end up paying Jackson to play Nick Fury in not one, not two, but three of your movies, it’ll be worth it. The guy brings that much fan cred to the films, especially genre fare like these.
Then again, what Jackson is doing is obviously going to the fans to put the pressure on Marvel to pony up the dough. Jon Favreau did it brilliantly when he was in his own negotiation phase with Marvel, and maybe that little “talk” Favreau had with Jackson at the Scream Awards involved more than just, “Hey, Sam, what up, dude” chatter? One hopes, cause not having Jackson in the Marvel movies would just suck. David Hasselfhoff level suck.
Meanwhile, in totally unimportant news, Paul Bettany will be reprising his voice as Jarvis in “Iron Man 2″.
Below: Upon hearing news that Jackson may be out as Fury, The Hoff commented, “I still have the eye patch! Call me!”

Pay him, Marvel, Paramount, or whoever the hell writes the checks. Pay him and get it over with.
who need sam jackson he sucks anywayz… swap him with dennis quaid or harrison ford…and make john cena or randy couture captain america!
Hey Zack
Wrestlers have no business being in Comic Movies you need real actors.
Just because wrestlers are equal in size to most comic characters dosen’t mean they’re perfect for the role most of them them are horrible actors triple h, john sena and the list goes on.
They would be better of casting a real actor and putting the lbs and muscle on them and teaching them how to fight.
It worked in the Matrix, 300, Spiderman , Batman Begins, Dark Knight and so on.
man you don’t know what is an artist caus jackson is just brilliant
Drop him Fury is sapoused t5o be White i’m not racist but the the black Furry isn’t from the actual marvel world keep it original
well i in case you don’t know he has been black to so as iron man
was black too
If Jackson is out they can swap him(Hope he’s not) with Harrison Ford. Picture Nick Fury saying “I’ve got a bad feeling about this”. Jackson deserves a LOT more than an after the credits cameo though.
I have been a comic reader all of my life and I truly believe that if Sam L Jackson is not in thier movies …SO WHAT?For over 60 years Nick Fury was white. If David Hasselhoff didn’t do such a horrible job portraying Nick I don’t think there would be such an uproar over Sam.Harrison Ford as Nick Fury would be awesome but he’d want(and deserve)an even bigger paycheck!I personally would like to see Stallone play Nick Fury as he is as rugged as Nick and probably just as old.Don’t get me wrong,Sam L Jackson is a fantastic actor but He ain’t no Nicholas Jacob Fury!
yo forreal….. i say pay Jackson….. if u dont then not a lot of people will want to see it because of the character change…. i know i wont. the people that saw it will tell the people that didnt and soon the movie wont make any money. look at it this way….. he looks just like Fury. im telling you people to pay the stars….. yes i said stars. im talking about terrence howard, samuel l. jackson, and any other stars you have planned for your movies….. c’mon man/girl or whoever runs it. you are going to make “The Avengers” soon. you cant mke a movie as good as that with a shity cast. i want you to get the biggest cast you can….. but make sure that the cast members fit. if you do that then i will buy at least 7 tickets just for myself.
well just one thing comics have been declining in sales for years the fanbase is getting smaller then it ever was given there are still us comic junkies out there. movies are todays comic books give the readers and fans what they want. marvel should keep there ear to the ground personally i wasnt so keen on the spiderman castings at first but the actors proved themselves but i love samuel and i love harrison but if they want a great movie and money the issue the reality is you spend money to make money and both would be great for the role but for that level of fan base and that level of acting skill they will have to pay for it( personally i think the cheadle move was a bad one but i hope he surprises me, now what id personally love is a new xmen film with michael clark duncan clad as apocalypse, i could see it and i would love it but im not sure how it would hash into events of other movies
to hell with jackson. seriously, i’m not rascist but Nick Fury should be a white guy. (period) thats the was he was meant to be from the start. thats how stan wante it. like a crazy james bond-type of secret agent. Sam just just can’t pull off that role.
The new Marvel Movies are folllowing the Ultimates story line in which Fury is was based on Sam Jackson.
They wanted to change the character into a cooler persona (you can’t get any cooler than Sam Jackson)
Face it, the old Fury may have been cool 40 years ago but not now, plus 99.9% of Marvel’s character including the really cool ones are white, would spiderman or wolverine be any less cool if they had been written as a Black characters way back when?
Would they be as popular today?
Most of Marvels Black characters are lame and how many are heavy hitters like Hulk, Thor , Iron man Not one.
All the creators back then were white guys and when they did create a Black character they were most often poorly written , drawn and portrayed i.e. afro’s jive talking and from the ghetto that’s some Black people not all black people
Who’s the most powerful Black Marvel character STORM.
I noticed earlier that someone mentioned that Sam looks just like Fury. That would be the Fury from the “Ultimate Marvel Universe” … which is crap. It looks like him, because they actually made it to look like him specifically, not the other way around. Why the heck they felt the need to change the character’s race after 60 or so years is beyond me. Heck, I like Jackson, but for Pete’s sake leave the characters alone.
race really shouldn’t be a deciding factor in who plays a character. most of the big characters are white because (DUH!) the writers, artists, and editors were white in a white dominated society at the time. Fury could be asian, hispanic, or Maori for all it matters. Nick Fury wasn’t “meant” to be white. He was meant to be ex military American. So anyone that fits that bill will do.
same with any other character. some of us white guys have a hard time wrapping our brains around a traditionally white character being played/portrayed as non white. race should only be an issue if it is a defining part of the character, something central to who they are. and i agree GL that a lot of the old school black super hero characters were pretty lame. They were underpowered (or non powered mostly) and there was almost TOO MUCH focus on them as a BLACK super hero. too many of them had to have the word black in their name. like we couldn’t figure it out!
I beg to differ on the subject of black superheroes being lame, have we forgotten Powerman a.k.a LUKE CAGE
oh an The Black Panther… black is in the name but hardly a lame character. don’t get me wrong Nick Fury is a white guy but we are in a new era and these movies are’nt made for the comic book enthusiast but for the iPod generation.
“race really shouldn’t be a deciding factor in who plays a character”
Wolverine isn’t japanese
The Hulk isn’t portuguese
Captain America isn’t black
Cyclops isn’t spanish
Storm isn’t canadian
Magneto isn’t a german soldier in the time of WW2
Characters have origins, those origins depict what is expected of them in all aspects INCLUDING “race”. So shut your cowardly liberal mouth, it does matter. Keep true to the character in all ways or pay the consequences. For instance, Daredevil is not a gay acting douche bag, look what happened there, and learn…
