Update: Deadline reports that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct Disney’s “Wizard of Oz” prequel, and that Robert Downey Jr. will star. Goodbye “Wow”?
–Original Post Below–
Sam Raimi loves him a shiny new toy, and he might have found a new one to play with. Which means, so much for that “World of Warcraft” movie. It looks like another shiny movie project has caught Sam Raimi’s fancy, and he may be ready to ditch the digital landscapes of a live-action “WoW” movie for the digital landscapes of a “Wizard of Oz” prequel. Variety reports that Raimi is now officially in talks with Disney to helm “Oz, The Great and Powerful”. Of course, Raimi could end up doing both “Oz” and “Wow”, but considering the scope of both projects, that seems unlikely.
The trade also reveals more of “Oz’s” plot:
“Great and Powerful,” based upon the 1939 classic film, tells the story of a circus wrangler who is transported via tornado to the mysterious land of Oz, where they mistake him for an all-knowing Wizard.
If all goes according to plan, Disney will have Sam Raimi directing and Robert Downey Jr. starring. Of course, things rarely go as planned. Just ask Raimi and his ideas for a fourth “Spider-Man” movie…
So what, Sam, no “Evil Dead 4”, then?
