No, not a sequel to the Fede Alvarez reboot that’s due out this April 5, 2013. But rather, a sequel to his three “Evil Dead” films starting Bruce Campbell. You know, “Evil Dead 4“.
Or, as it’s probably best known to fans of the horror franchise — the oft-talked about, but rarely moved-upon “Evil Dead 4″.
According to Raimi himself, though, that may be changing soon. As early as this Summer, in fact. During what was apparently a London gathering with press, Raimi was asked about the status of his own “Evil Dead” franchise (re: not the reboot), and was quoted as replying (via Bleeding Cool):
I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.
“Love” to? He sounds like he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. Sam, if you want to make this thing, you’re going to make this thing. It’s up to you, man.
In any case, I wouldn’t really get your hopes up too much, “Evil Dead” fans. We’ve heard this sort of talk about moving on an “Evil Dead 4″ before. In fact, Raimi and star Bruce Campbell were talking up this movie for years before they decided to go the easy route and just reboot it.
Granted, that reboot looks pretty damn good, but still, two “Evil Dead” franchises? I honestly don’t know how that would work, especially with Raimi controlling both franchises. That doesn’t sound like good business to me, and Raimi is nothing if not business savvy.
Like I said, though: if Raimi wants to make an “Evil Dead 4″, he’ll make an “Evil Dead 4″. If it never gets made, there’s no other reason why, except Raimi didn’t want to make it.
Or not? Or actually, yes? I’m confused. And apparently so is Sam Raimi, kinda. Here’s a new interview with Raimi, as transcribed from the blokes at HeyUGuys, a day after Raimi supposedly made the comment above:
They made me say that last night at the Apple store. I’ve said that before, about that movie, and the fans go, ‘why do you keep talking about that? Why don’t you just make that thing already and stop talking?’ So I tried to stop talking about it, and last night at this Apple Store, some fan says, ‘are you making Evil Dead 4’, and I said, ‘I don’t really have a plan right now to do it’. So they say, ‘oh come on, do it! Do it’, ‘I could start writing it this summer with my brother’, who was in the audience, and they all go ’yeah we want the Evil Dead movie’, so I said, well, I guess’, and they said, ‘come on Sam’, so they kind of forced me to say that. I feel very funny. I don’t know what’s going to happen to me now; they could get mad at me now that I’m saying this.
That clears it up, right? Sort of. Raimi goes on:
Well last night my brother said, ‘why are you being such a jerk? You actually have a few people that want to see this project, you’re not that brilliant, give them what they damn well want. Why are you fighting?’ He had a good point.
So are you saying you MIGHT do it after all?
I started wondering that last night, in the car ride home from that place. My brother said, because Fede Alvarez is not using the character of Ash, we could actually make Part 4 concurrently.
Maybe. Possibly. Wait and see?
