Sam Raimi Talks Spiderman 4, Sinister Six

We all know Sony is going to make another Spider-Man movie. Wait, let me amend that last statement: We all know Sony is going to make more Spider-Man MOVIES. Why? Because even the worst of the previous three films, part 3, is sitting at #11 in all-time money earners, and it’s still not dead yet. When all is said and done, it’ll probably break through into the Top 10 slot of all time. So why wouldn’t Sony want the entire cast, including series director Sam Raimi, to come back for another (or two or three) go-around? If the studios are willing to spend $175 to make “Evan Almighty”, what’s $300 to make “Spider-Man 4″ or “5”?

In an interview with MTV, Raimi hints that he wants to come back for a fourth entry. He places the maybe-maybe not on that same thing they all do: The story has to be “good enough” for him to come back. In Hollywood, that translates to: “Drive the brink truck over to my Malibu palace and we’ll talk, boys.”

But hey, maybe I’m misreading Raimi’s intentions. Here are excerpts from the interview, found in its entirety here:

Ultimately, if Sony considers the price tag too high for another Raimi/Maguire/Dunst collaboration, then the negotiations would turn to keeping Raimi onboard as a producer only. “I would still hope that Sony would offer it to me [to direct] first,” he said. “But that is not my place to say; it would be more about if Sony decided not to go with me. If not, it would be really up to them to come to a solution [for me to still be involved as a producer].”

Either way, if this tangled web does still involve the filmmaker, Raimi has been busy brainstorming about the villains he’d like to get into the next flick. “I would love to see Electro, Vulture, maybe the Sinister Six as a team,” he said.

Those three possibilities wouldn’t necessarily cancel each other out. Since both were founding members of the Six, the Soviet supervillain and high-flying supergenius could appear in the next flick, be teamed with a returning Doctor Octopus and Sandman and form a supergroup to also introduce Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter.

Whether that story line works out or not, Raimi hopes to finally reward Dylan Baker’s patience with a villainous payoff similar to what Franco enjoyed in “3.” “I love Dylan Baker as a person, and I really like the character he is developing,” the filmmaker said of Dr. Curt Connors, Parker’s one-armed, screen-time-challenged professor in the first three flicks.

“The Lizard is probably one of my favorite characters,” he said of the baddie Connors eventually became in the comics. (He joined the Sinister Six when they became the Sinister Twelve, by the way.) “But ['Spider-Man 4'] will probably have to start with the central journey of the main character to arrive at the proper villain.”

I absolutely think they should finally get to the Lizard storyline already. If not, then what’s the point in putting the Lizard’s human alter ego in all the previous movies?

as much as i love the idea of the sinister six, doc ock drowned in the second movie, and i dont think the concept of resurrection suits spiderman.
also, i dont know whether sandman actually died or not, but the speech between him and spiderman was too redeeming to allow him to return as a villain again.
but the lizard idea is brilliant. it will work perfectly for the fourth movie.
what makes the spiderman movies so much better than the other marvel films (which were absolutely terrible) is the emotion connections between the protagonists and antagonists. this is why it would be so succesful for the lizard to be used as the villain in the next film, as there is a history between him and spiderman.

    just my two cents

    Doc Ock drowned?

I didn’t see that… I saw him descending in the water, but until there’s a body and funeral anything can happen ;)

    Lizard for 4.

But please go sparingly on villains…

Spidey 3 should have been Spiderman V Venom only.

Remember what happened with the Batman movies? One villain, if played convincingly to a good script can carry the film. As soon as the Batman movies started cramming in tag-teaming villains after the Nicholson Joker movie, the quality went out the window.

I just hope Sony don’t follow Warners lead.
