Sammo Hung vs. War Monkeys: WHO YA GOT??

Are you kidding me? Sammo Hung versus some stinkin’ war monkeys set loose accidentally? Just exactly who is supposed to be the underdog here? Or should we say, undermonkey? Oh, man, I kill me. Anywhatever. So, Hong Kong vet Sammo Hung is in current negotiations for the movie. In Hollywood parlance, that means they’re figuring out how much they’ll need to pay him to star and, probably, also direct, although the latter is just pure guesstimation on my part, but being that Sammo has done both, and done both very well especially when it comes to action movies, they’ll be smart to get him for double duty.

The horror comedy follows two janitors who, during a Christmas holiday, get trapped in an underground research facility after accidentally unleashing military-trained Rhesus monkeys. Hung is one of the janitors who battles the rabid simians.

Cleve Nettles wrote the script, based on a story by DHI producer Chris Patton. Robert Sanchez is also producing.

“Monkeys, guns, explosions. As a genre freak, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Munroe, who became obsessed with the project after initially agreeing to read a friend’s work.

“Monkeys” is eying an early 2009 start. The monkeys will be a combination of real monkeys, animatronic puppets and CGI.

Mark my words: Sammo Hung as star and director. Now who to play second fiddle to Sammo? How about Bruce Campbell as the goofy sidekick? Heck, Dark Horse is already distributing Campbell’s “My Name is Bruce”, so it’s a perfect fit. I see cult hit written all over this thing. That, or a bad rash. Either/or.
