Samuel Bayer to Direct Near Dark Remake

Horror Movie News, Near Dark (Remake, 2008) Movie — By Nix on September 18, 2007 |

The vampire movie “Near Dark” was one of the very first movies I ever saw in theaters back in 1987. It was, shall we say, one of my first “adult” films, and I recall that it was entertaining, and one scene in particular stuck with me — when they were running away from the sunlight, using blankets to hide themselves, and smoke was literally oozing out of them. That was a great scene, but that’s also really all I remember from the movie. (It was a while ago, and I haven’t seen it since, give me a break.) The original was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and now word is that music video director Samuel Bayer has been given the helming duties on the remake.

Says Bloody-Disgusting:

Bloody-Disgusting has been scooped that Samuel Bayer will in fact helm Rogue Pictures’ Near Dark remake for Platinum Dunes. Bayer directed music videos for The Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Green Day, Garbage and many others. Matt Venne wrote the screenplay that follows a young man who reluctantly joins a travelling “family” of evil vampires, when the girl he’d tried to seduce is part of that group. This will be the next film from Platinum Dunes, which is headed by Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.

Another music video director gets a shot at a movie. What else is new?

Here’s a better description of the original (and one presumes, the remake) from IMDB.com:

A mid-western farm boy reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns out to be part of a band of southern vampires who roam the highways in stolen cars. Part of his initiation includes a bloody assault on a hick bar.

Oooh, bloody assaults on hick bars. Who can’t appreciate that? Stupid hicks.
