The last time we visited the clan of Rodriguez and McGowan, they were still in a battle with the Powers That Be over who was going to star in the remake of “Barbarella”. Rodriguez, the director, wanted his bride Rose McGowan, but the studio? Not so much. With that movie seemingly now stuck somewhere between limbo and “not a chance in hell”, Rodriguez and McGowan have moved on to a new big screen heroine with which to make Rose McGowan the international superstar they both apparently believe she can be. And her name is Red Sonja.
USA Today has the story:
“I was surprised when Rose brought me a script of Red Sonja that she liked,” Rodriguez says from his home base of Austin, where he is shooting Shorts, a family film with James Spader and Jon Cryer. “I found it very entertaining. Sonja was strong, smart, cunning — just about everything she’d have to be to survive.”
McGowan’s initial impulse when offered the part? To laugh.
“When they first came to me with it, I thought it was funny,” says the actress, 34. “I do have a body made for sitting on a veranda with mint juleps and a parasol. I don’t know why I always have to save the planet.”
Kinda sounds like Rodriguez and McGown have learned their lessons from “Barbarella”, and instead of trying to shoehorn McGowan in as the star of “Red Sonja”, they’re going the, “They wanted me to star, but I was doubtful” approach. It’ll be funny (but not entirely ludicrous) if it turns out McGowan and Rodriguez have cooked up this whole scenario they’re laying out for USA Today. Hey, I’m not saying it’s true, but I am saying Rodriguez sure seems mighty obsessed (some would say, pathetically so) with turning McGowan into a kickass big screen movie heroine.
Then again, McGowan as Red Sonja? Eh, why not.
The original “Red Sonja” movie from the ’80s starred Brigitte Nielsen as the freakishly huge Red Sonja of the title. Arnold Schwarzenegger co-starred, but not as Conan, although he kinda looked like Conan. Except, you know, not.
