Maybe they should call the sequel “The Still Amazing Spider-Man” instead of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”? Just a thought.

In any case, just as there can’t possibly be an eventually dead Uncle Ben in a Spider-Man movie, there can’t be a Spider-Man movie without Mary Jane Watson. She’s only the most important female character in the superhero’s life, after all, regardless of how cute Emma Stone was as Gwen Stacy in the first movie.

So keeping that in mind, here’s news that “The Descendants” star Shailene Woodley is currently in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming “The Amazing Spider-Man” sequel. Gwen Stacy was always expected to be Spidey’s love interest in the reboot, with MJ eventually introduced and slowly taking over. Don’t be surprise if MJ only shows up briefly in the sequel, or is “just friends” with Spidey until the third movie. Mary Jane Watson, as you’ll recall, was played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s three “Spider-Man” films.

Besides making a splash in the drama “The Descendants” with George Clooney, Woodley is ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” TV show.

Electro Comic BookAs for a villain, the electrifying Electro is rumored to be the next bad guy up for Spidey to battle, the Arachnid Knight having taken down The Lizard in the first flick. Well, it beats, say, the geriatric Vulture or, er, the ridiculous looking Rhino, right? Dudes shoots electricity out of his hands, after all. That should look pretty cool onscreen. I hope he keeps the mask, though. That’s just awesome.

Another character expected to be ported over from the Raimi films (although to be fair, they were originated in the comics) is Harry Osborn, played by James Franco in the Raimi trilogy. Osborn is a spoiled rich brat who forms an unlikely alliance with Peter Parker, before eventually becoming one of his biggest enemies. He is also the son of Norman Osborn, aka Spidey’s Rogues Gallery favorite, The Green Goblin.

Director Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield (aka Spider-Man) are already confirmed for the sequel, with Emma Stone also expected back as Gwen Stacy. Sony has already scheduled “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” to hit theaters May 2, 2014.
