Shane Abbess’ Gabriel Trailer and Poster

Gabriel (2007) Movie, Videos — By Nix on August 15, 2007

A poster for the Australian fantasy/action film “Gabriel” has popped up online here. I’ve never heard of the film, but it sure looks like something I could get into.Written and directed by Shane Abbess, the film stars Andy Whitfield as an arc angel. The poster (to your left, bigger version below) seems to be hinting at an “Underworld” connection, and the trailer (also below) certainly looks like it’s taking its visual cues from Len Wiseman’s movie. Very action-packed and creature-oriented. If nothing else, the film’s Australian roots should make it seem slightly different, even if the whole thing does look very familiar.

GABRIEL tells the story of an Arc Angel who fights to bring light back to purgatory – a place where darkness rules – and save the souls of the city’s inhabitants.

Starring Andy Whitfield, Dwaine Stevenson, Samantha Noble and Erika Heynatz, and written and directed by Shane Abbess.

Gabriel falls November 29, 2007 in Australia, but American audiences will have to wait a whopping year and change, on December 31, 2008, to catch Gabriel’s fight.

Here’s the trailer:

Gabriel did not die at the end. He “fell” and gave up his arc angel status to become human and remain in purgatory to 1.stay with Jade and 2. find how all of the corruption came about. Similar to when Nicolas Cage throws himself off of a builing in City of Angels to become human and be with Meg Ryan.

Also, in NO way did the movie ever claim to take thier story directly out of the bible or use it as a reference. Some of the names are that of the archangels mentioned in the bible and the rest are historical references to other mythological characters. The same with the fallen. If you wanted a movie based off of the bible go to church. The arcs were like humans because when they entered purgatory they BECAME human. Obviously LOL wasn’t paying attention or was too uneducated to understand. If LOL could read they explained it in the opening scenes. I wouldnt be surprised if LOL couldn’t read based off of the horrendous spelling. The movie was excellent especially for being low budget. For those with an open mind and an imagination it is very much worth seeing. All of the actors are brand new and did such an excellent job acting you would never even know this was fact. Thorougly enjoyable!

Oh, and Michael is leader of the fallen because when he killed Sammael he already had hatred in his heart and succumed to evil. He wanted to rule purgatory because he was tired of being an angel created only to serve another.

I don’t understand why this movie was so horribly ridiculed by the critics. It’s good. That’s all there is to it – it’s good. I do admit that the plot isn’t that elaborate (although with an original concept), but the cinematography and the acting make up for it more than enough. There is something about the way it’s filmed that gives it a very distinct quality. Yes, you CAN see some influences from Underworld, Blade, the Crow and Matrix, but Gabriel isn’t as
“polished.” It’s awkward, dissonant and disorienting, which is exactly what makes it so great in my opinion. Characters are not oversimplified (as some seem to think), they are simply in a place where there is no need for lies. This straightforward honesty is almost scary…
