Sharlto Copley is putting in some TV work. Or, well, online TV work, which is basically the same thing these days, right?
The star of “The A-Team,” “Elysium,” and most recently, “Maleficent” has signed on to headline the Playstation Network’s reboot of the FX show “Powers,” based on the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis. He’ll be taking over the role originally played by Jason Patric in the pilot episode, before FX decided they’d rather not do the show, or air the pilot at all.
Copley will star as Christian Walker…
…a cop with darkness and violence at his surface but with a sense of buried integrity. The character jumps first and thinks later. Dapper and charismatic, he has the dissolute air of a faded rock star and the body of a battered heavyweight. Once possessed of super-powers, Walker lost his powers in a battle with a super-human mass killer. A faded hero, he’s now a detective who works with law enforcement, using his singular expertise to investigate crimes in the Powers community.
…who has a cool and hard exterior with a fire right below the surface. The character is the undisputed super star of the Powers community who is an icon of justice, selflessness and business acumen. Her willingness to put herself at risk for the good of others is matched only by her ability to manage her globe-spanning personal brand.
The interesting thing here? Not Copley taking over the lead, but Forbes playing Retro Girl. She’s replacing Carly Foulkes, who played the character in the pilot. Foulkes is most known as the T-Mobile girl, and is over 20 years younger than Forbes. Which is, well, weird that they’re recasting the character with such an older actress. Does that mean the character herself has gotten a major reworking for this version of “Powers”?
I guess we’ll find out what’s going on when the show premieres on the Playstation Network this December.
