You may recall a pair of crazy music videos we posted a while back called “Insane Office Escape”, featuring music by the band Biting Elbows. The videos were directed by a Russian named Ilya Naishuller, who is also the frontman for the band, apparently, and it looks like a lot of people took notice.
Naishuller has now signed up to direct a movie called “Hardcore” that will continue the first-person POV action of his music videos, but be based on an original screenplay that he wrote. Fellow Russian Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted”) will produce the movie, along with Katia Kononeko and Inga Vainshtein.
And oh yeah, get this: they’ve landed “District 9’s” Sharlto Copley as their star. While storylines weren’t revealed, “Hardcore” will apparently “feature sci-fi elements and find Copley killing a lot of bad guys to save a damsel in distress.”
Basically, like the music videos, but with an actual story. (We hope, anyway.)
“Hardcore” will be shot in Russia, probably after Copley finishes up his promo tours for “Elysium” (which he co-starred as the bad guy fighting Matt Damon, for his “District 9” director Neill Blomkamp) and Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” (where he also plays a villain). It’s about time someone let this guy play a hero again.
Here are those two music videos by Naishuller if you’re looking to get a little jacked up this Friday morning:
