Ming-Na, aka Ming-Na Wen back in her “E.R.” days, is the first actor besides Clark Gregg to sign on to the cast of Joss Whedon and Marvel’s upcoming ABC TV show “SHIELD”, a spin-off TV series featuring the spy agency seen in the Marvel films fronted by Nick Fury.
(FYI: SHIELD stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, and in the Marvel Universe is the supreme spy agency, with their priority being defense against all threats foreign, domestic, and interstellar.)
Ming-Na, last seen as a regular on the Syfy Channel’s sci-fi show “Eureka” (and Syfy’s “Stargate: Universe” before that), will play Agent Melinda May, described as “a top-notch pilot, weapons expert and soldier who is described as being soulful but damaged by her time spent in combat.”
Curiously, that character description sounds like Agent Althea Rice, whose character was revealed in a previous character list for the show earlier in the month. I guess they decided to change her name. Which is for the best, because calling an Asian character “Rice” seems a tad, shall we say, uncool.
Whedon will produce and oversee the TV show, along with co-writing the pilot with his brother Jed Whedon and Jed’s wife Maurissa Tancharoen. The trio previously put their heads together and camp up with the very funky superhero musical “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”.
“SHIELD”, unlike a lot of Marvel attempts at an ongoing TV show, is a sure thing given the popularity of “The Avengers” and the success of the Marvel films. The Hulk wishes he could say the same thing.
