It’s still full steam ahead on ABC’s Joss Whedon-fronted “SHIELD” TV series, with the show now adding two more names to its roster: Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker (the duo pictured below).
British actress Elizabeth Henstridge will play Agent Gemma Simmons, described as a “science whiz” who spends all her time with fellow SHIELD agent Leo Fitz, to be played by fellow UK resident Iain De Caestecker, described as “a technology guru”. The two are said to “spend all their time together — mostly bickering — and are masters at a remarkably young age of their respective fields.”
I’ve never heard of Henstridge, but I know De Caestecker from the Brit TV supernatural show “The Fades”, which was kinda cool. (Read a review of the first season here.)
They join a cast that will be fronted by former “ER” star Ming-Na, along with Marvel mainstay Clark Gregg, reprising his role of SHIELD agent Phil Coulson from the Marvel movies. How is that possible, you ask? Oh, I’m sure they’ll figure out a way to get around the, um, unfortunate event that befell Coulson in “The Avengers”. This is a movie franchise based on comic books, after all.
“Avengers” director Joss Whedon is writing the pilot script with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and will remain as producer. He probably won’t be doing the daily operations ala showrunning, since he’s got all that Marvel stuff in the wings. After all, you don’t get appointed “architect” of an entire movie universe and still have time keeping things running on a TV show.
