Shyamalan Says Last Airbender Sequel Will be Darker, More Kyoshi-rific

Undeterred by rabid negative fan reaction, negative critical reaction, mediocre box office, and a lowly 8% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes (as of this writing), M. Night Shyamalan is soldering on with plans for a second and third “The Last Airbender” movie — that is, if the film ends up making enough money to justify a sequel or two, and the studio greenlights them. At this point, that’s a pretty big IF.

Speaking to MTV, Shyamalan spills on his ideas for the sequels:

The third is more ambiguous, but the second one, I’ve written a draft that I’m really happy with and is darker and richer, and it has a wonderful antagonist in it in Azula, who’s kind of like our only real, pure antagonist in the series, so I’m excited about that.

And on the missing Kyoshi warriors, who failed to make any appearance at all in the first movie:

We shot [the scene] and [the Kyoshi Warriors] were amazing, and we spent an unbelievable amount of time choreographing them. And they just distracted from the movie, because the movie wasn’t about them.

For those hoping to see the colorful warriors show up in the DVD as deleted scenes, don’t hold your breath. Shyamalan says he’s decided to introduce them in the second movie, and that’s that, jack.

So what are the chances of a “Last Airbender” sequel? The film, made for $150 million (not including promotion and advertising, which are usually equal to or greater than the production budget for big Hollywood movies), has grossed $79 million so far in domestic release. It has still to open worldwide, so there’s always a chance the film will continue to chug along toward a respectable haul Stateside, while cleaning up overseas. Either way, it needs to at least turn in around $300 million or change, with a huge splash on DVD, for the studio to even consider a sequel, much less two.

I completely agree!! Such a huge disappointment!! It could have been an excellent movie with lots of graphics and details to work with. If given to the right director, it could have been a hit like Lord of the Rings or Avatar or even Harry Potter…where are the many graphics that belong to The Last Airbender? And I was soooo looking forward to this movie! It appears that all the action was in the previews.

TO HELL WITH M.NIGHT SHYAMALAN. He destroyed the Avatar movie. He is a retard. How dare he say “the movie wasn't about the Kyoshi warriors, that's why there weren't in it.” Just because it's not about a group of people, doesn't make them less important. The series isn't just about Aang either, and guess what, the only reason Sokka is the way he is at the North Pole is because he met Sukki. But Night' destroyed the battle scene at the North Pole so I guess it doesn't matter that the Kyoshi Warriors weren't in it anyway. And the idiot left out Jet and the rest of the freedom fighters. REALLY?!?!?!?! I can honestly say as a Die Hard Avatar fan, he literally did NOTHING right wuith that movie, and anyone who says different is just as dumb. If I ever get the god given pleasure of meeting M. Night Shyamalan I will drop kick him in the nut sack.

  • Kadia

Shyamalan is HORRIBLE!!! He BUTCHERED a masterpeice!!! Anyone who 'liked' the movie didnt get what the AVATAR was about. All the characters are inconsistent wth the cartoon character personalities!!

The fantasy part about the movie was lost!!! I mean the Kitara and Sokka are dark skinned people and they are white in the movie!!! Princess Yue becomes the moon spirit and then in the movie she dies!!! Sokka is supposed to be funny and hilarious but he comes off in the movie as JUST cautious and protecting.

The Avatar story is a quest for truth and development of oneself. It shows how a boy becomes a man and then a hero. The movie was just weird!!! Whats worse instead of things flowing in the move the information that is needed is just randomly put in. Like the time princess Yue was telling Sokka about the moon spirit. Or when Ang was telling ZUko that they could be friends.. MAN IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!

Dont get me started on Uncle IRO the amazing story teller , goof and lover of tea. Zuko the mad, angry banished prince comes off as a wimp! And the firelord comes off as sensitive and caring for his son.EH?

You guys should be arrested for the BAD ACTING!!

And the BENDING!!!! omg it was not AWESOME~ IT SUCKED!!!! They moved too much and NOTHING HAPPENS. Makes me wonder if Shyamalan actually watched the cartoons or read the scripts.

At the theatre it was unanimous that the was the ABSOLUTE WORST MOVIE EVER!!!
There was a great oppurtunity here but he blew it!!!

I will not watch anymore of the books that he sends out.ITs a waste of time and it will taint the real JApanese/Chinese masterpeice.

Yep there is more but i will spare you guys.

  • Kadia

Its not just that the show misses a lot of oppurtunities, it missed EVERYTHING!!! The fantasy, the danger, the passion the character personalities, Everything!!!!

It is the most horrible movie of all time to date because there was such a high expectation and it sucked! THe BAD ACTING SUCKED. Everything about it sucked. ITs almost as if Shyamalan hated the Avatar series and said 'ha fans, in your face!!!”

  • Kadia

How can you 'like' something so terrible!! You must not even understand what the Avatar is about!. Shyamalan is absolutely horrible!!!! I am so angry he did this. I agree with Guest 011.

Please you guy, quite whinning like a baby for it’s bottle and grow up and be apart of the real world. Exspectations in life are often dashed life seems to let you down. I enjoyed the movie, but would like to have seen eye poping 3D effects leap from the screen as some 3D movies do, but this one did not. But I can appreiate the effort to make and bring to life the animated version of the series, which can be difficult to do, but can be don, example (Lord of The Rings). You guys who are whinning and crying about names, and charater behavier, whould you have rather never seen nothing. You guys are living in a box world where the only thing you can ever reialize is your own idea of what suppose to happen inside of your world. Things in life are more often times more complex and challenging than what you may persive. Exaimine yourselves, how may people have you disappointed or let down. Did they turn on you and say that you are no good, never should have been born (I Pray Not) but even if they did, either you moved own with your life, or you should be doing so. I say again, I enjoyed the movie, and I’m entitled to my opinion, just as you are entitled to yours, but to keep going on and on with this petie “senselessness” is crazy. Anug instead of Ang, in the cartoon he was silly, but in the movie he was to series is childs play. You have watched the cartoon series and learn to appreiate it. Great, the animators can get away with a lot of things when you sitting there drawing a charater on paper. But when you attempt to bring a charater to life, its a different story when you have budget constraints, a pool of actors who either look just like the animated charater, but cant act, or a good actor who can really act, but does not look anything like the animated charater. Real live charater that come to the table are nothing like an illistrator’s per conceived notion of how he wants his charater to be. Somebody please reply to this post, because Im edgar to respond. In this post and am holding back on deeply I feel about how you guys are trying to dismantel and discredit this movie. You dont have to like it, but respect someone’s attempt at trying to satisfy your yarning at seening the real thing in a movie. Maybe they have “Similac” with iron on sale at your local grocery store. Respecfully, Me!

    • KASPi

      your just a racist.
you’re not even watching just the movie because the characters are different from the series, you’re just criticizing the characters that are portrayed by not really major actors.
i say those who say Shyamalan sucks are just racists who don’t want other countries to show their view of art.

Bad acting and a poorly written script. If a movie has either of those there is no way it can redeem itself with me. And will people stop saying how hard it is to cram 9 hours of cartoon into less than two hours of movie. If he'd gotten rid of all that damn exposition it might have been a bit easier. Katara's narration was over done and annoying. Every time she spoke I wanted to tell her to shut the hell up. Instead of watching these kids act Katara told us how they were feeling. And the redundancy was just cringe worthy. The characters would explain what they were going to do, explain what they were doing while they did it, and then right after they did it they'd explain what they just did. Okay, I got the information the first time. Stop beating me over the head with. That script, which totally massacred the English language, ruined the movie for me. Despite the negative reviews I was willing to watch this movie and forgive and forget things like the casting, Zuko's scar and the missing Kyoshi warriors, but that script pissed me off so much that now I'm angry about all of that too. I can even forgive the terrible acting because most of them were newcomers and what they had to work with was horrendous, but M. Night Shyamalan stick to directing because you have zero talent as a writer. If you insist on writing the next two films I urge you, no I beg you, please stop being such an egomaniac and work with somebody on this. A little helpful criticism goes a long way.

No I know all about it. I've said why I liked it. Go back and read again.

@ Dedpool aka Jiinx <——– Well, I am happy that you and your 4 yr old kid enjoyed the movie. As you are the adult, I hoped that you would know what is good and what is bad. Funny how you said you know all about it and yet you still think that this movie was enjoyable. Like what Kadia commented ' You must not even understand what the Avatar is about, fanboy!'

All I've said was that you were hired to write good 'REVIEWS / OPINIONS' on review forums like this one. By all means, if by posting here is not a review/opinion, then enough is said. As you are the 'single-minded one', it shows here that you can't even understand the simplicity of your own actions. Like i said either, there is no need to go any further. Enjoy this crappy movie Fanboy and keep on writing your your review/opinion or should I say post.

      • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool aka Jiinx

you see I do actual reviews on here, and me saying I enjoyed the film is not a review but my opinion, to which I am wholly entitled to. That said if you read it again you’ll see that I also took into account the things no one else seems to be. It’s an adaptation and change was inevitable. Yes it was rushed, and the dialogue was choppy but it was still a fun little movie for what it was attempting to adapt. I think had he made the movie bout 30 min longer it would’ve been much better. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to but the studio made hi’ crop it. He shot the Kyoshi Warriors (seen pics n there’s even a McDonalds toy n movie card) and his own movies are usually longer so it seemed strange this was so short. But what ever, I know it could have better but this wasn’t nearly as bad as Dragonball. Sorry. I was a bit dissapointed too, but damn some of this is just sad.

Thank you Ded! Guess your a dick, people come here to put out there opinions for people to see. It’s fine that you didn’t like the movie and I can completely understand why you didn’t. Those reasons just dont equate to me calling the entire movie crap. You accuse someone of being a fanboy and then make statements like “You must not even understand what the Avatar is about”. Dont be a dick man, be a dude or dudette lol.

I enjoyed this film as well. I think that there were changes, but there had to be. I think the two characters that were nailed completely were Aang (though the awkward editing of the film didn’t help the dialogue and therefore the acting, and Iro. Iro was by far nailed the best and I felt he was as warming a character as he is in the TV show. Besides the awkward editing that settled down towards the middle of the film, I enjoyed it. The first book is ALL Introduction, and being that a film doesn’t have the time to go through an entire series of intros for all characters and side characters that exist in this show, they focused on what was important. Now we find that the editing was so poor because they cut out an entire storyline and took out the kyoshi warriors because of plans for the second film and the fact that they were so sweet that it would have taken all the attention away from Aang. I get this as a filmmaker without condoning and understand that it would anger some people. Overall I think the movie is a 6.5 out of 10, and i was shown enough to make me think the second movie could correct everything being that they are bringing in the kyoshi warriors and some of the people will be better actors by then (which is a process that happens with all child actors). I missed Sokka’s humor but as i watch the show, most of it is only capable through contortions and facial expressions that either dont translate to film or are too exaggerated to be done. In place of his humor I got something that I felt was fitting. He didn’t completely suck at fighting, THANK GOD! He still isn’t the best but he’s not useless until the 3rd book (where he learns the sword) and never gets to use it ever again. I think that along with better editing, Kitara and Aang will develop the connection that fans want, By the time they’re suppose to. I enjoyed this movie and can look at it as a fan, but with an open mind. Some of you people who cant so eloquently articulate your views and come out of the gate spewing venom need to mature a little. Hate the film all you want, but no one here deserves or needs your insults.

      • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool aka Jiinx

Well said my good friend. Very well said indeed. Best points were the editing, the fact that the first season is all intro and the fact that something got filmed and then pulled (Kyoshi Warriors). Its good to have someone else on that understands how hard it is to adapt stuff from one medium to another. And yeah the insulting make me think people are like 9. But good to see ya man. Glad you enjoyed it too.

First of all, the acting was horrendous. Secondny, M. Night Shyamalan may think he got away with ripping it off, but I see through his charades. He tries to cover his tracks by renaming and changing the personalities of the main characters, but it was all in vain. The main character, a bald kid with an arrow on his head, looks just just Aang from Avatar- the joyful and playful young airbender, but Shyamalan covers this by calling him Ong and turns him into a brooding little emo kid who barely talks to his companions. His companions! We all know Sokka, the clumsy joker who tries his best to act the leader, well Shyamalan takes his trademark ponytail and weapons but names the character Soh-kuh and makes him a tough, strong-silent type who barely talks. Clever, Mr. Shyamalan, but when it comes to the character of Katara, he didn’t even bother changing her name! Instead of a bossy motherly figure for the trio, she’s a whiny bitch who never has anything interesting to say. The cleverness of Shyamalan doesn’t end there though. The main antagonist we’re given is a firebender named Zuko- just like the cartoon, except this time he’s only a bit disfigured and he’s Indian, instead of Chinese! Nice try Shyamalan, but that’s still asian! Not only that, but it’s clear he outright stole the plot to the first and last few episodes of the first season. He of course stayed away from the rest of the season, but it’s totally obvious he stole the ending. Well, not the final battle- he made something new up for that- but still.
The jig’s up, Shymalamadingdong. Even though you tried to keep the theft minimal, and decided against any character development, it’s clear you ripped off Avatar and you know it. You ought to be ashamed.

@Pepperislove About this “ripping it off” stuff… you know the movie was BASED ON the cartoon, right? That’s why the plot was basically the same, the characters were the same, and it even had the part of the opening sequence of the cartoon in it. He was SUPPOSED to do that.
Although the acting did suck terribly. The guy who played Zuko was ridiculous.

i think that it should be michael bay or spielberg who will handle this movie… they can undertake this like they've did in transformers… shyamalan's film is disgusting…

  • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool aka Jiinx

Bay? Oh please no. It'll be nothing but explosions.

Redo the whole movie. Paramount Pictures needs to redo do the whole movie and call it the “Last Airbender: The Book Of Water” and make it very evident and advertised that M. Night has nothing do with the movie. The should release this movie for half price the first week. It's the only right thing to do since they robbed us and ripped us off the first time around.
