Shyamalan Updates Unbreakable 2, Night Chronicles 3

In an interview with the blokes at MTV, M. Night Shymalan reveals that he took one of the villains that were supposed to appear in his “Unbreakable” sequel (apparently there were going to be more than one villain), and is now using the bad guy in his third “Night Chronicles” movie instead.

Says the Nightman:

I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles.’ It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.’

For those who don’t know what all these “Night Chronicles” stuff are, it’s just a trio of movies that Shyamalan has commited to doing.

The first in the “Chronicles” is “Devil”, which is due out later this year. The second will be the supernatural jury movie “Twelve Strangers”, and the third, which is still unnamed, will be the third “Night Chronicles” movie in question.

Got all that? Good.

Here’s the actual interview:

I loved “Unbreakable,” and even had my own ideas about doing a comicbook of it. i think it would’ve been pretty good too. I kept it simple and didn’t go crazy with the powers. Like one villain was a serial killer who had the same abilities as Bruce Willis’ character, but he had learned about them earlier so he was stronger, and even more resiliant. He also couldn;t feel anyhting which made him go a bit crazy.

I’ve always maintained that Unbreakable is the perfect superhero movie — right up to the final 10 minutes or so. Take out the psychic nonsense, and it would have been nearly perfect.

I liked that aspect of his powers. Wasn’t the normal “I can read minds” things but more of a tactile based empathy/memory thing. He can’t see what someone is thinking, only what they’ve done, and ONLY through touch. I’ve seen someone else with that ability in other stuff. It’s actually a pretty handy little talent if you’re trying to find someone, but then again it can backfire when there’s too much info.

Sure, it’s a neat power, but that’s not really my point. Giving him psychic powers completely torpedos the whole point of the film: that there were guys like Willis’ character who aren’t necessarily SUPER, but just tougher, more durable than others. Say, the way Michael Jordan is more agile, or how a track runner is faster than everyone else, etc. Not necessarily SUPERMAN-ish, but just … more. You could actually believe there are people like that in existence, but they just never realized what they were, and just went through life becoming great athletes, etc. Then he gives Willis psychic powers, something completely out of a comic book, and there goes the movie. For me, anyway. I’m sure comic book guys loved it and thinks it’s completely rational, but I thought it undermined the film’s own central premise.

I get you. But I took it more along the “Phenomenon” route where he was just using his brain on a higher level than most. That was the next villain I had created for my idea. WHat if all the studying about ESP, Telekenesis and such was right. WHat if there were people who could do stuff like that only because they had more access to their brain functions than most. What if there were some who HAD realized what they were and have been exploiting it? He always had the ability. it was first used at the stadium, they just didn’t SHOW it until the end, but it was mentioned.

Well it was still a great film and hopefully he’ll get the chance to make a sequel. Though the idea of him fighting Mr. Glass doesn’t exactly fill me with glee lol.

Yeah. Lol. Thats why i came up with the guy with similar powers.
