Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of “District 9” and “Elysium” director Neill Blomkamp’s latest, the sci-fi drama-as-social-allegory “Chappie”. Well, I don’t know for sure if “Chappie” will feature the director’s usual blend of groovy sci-fi action and social allegory, but let’s face it, it probably will.
Weaver joins Blomkamp BFF Sharlto Copley and Hugh Jackman in the film, the plot for which goes something like this:
After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.
If you thought raising a kid was hard, try raising a robot baby! Amirite, parents?
“Chappie’s” cast also includes Dev Patel, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret. Yes, there’s someone named “Ninja” in this movie. No, really.
Production on the film is already underway in Johannesburg, South Africa, with Blomkamp directing from a script he co-wrote with Terri Tatchell. Check out the short film that Blomkamp directed that looks to be the basis for “Chappie”.
