Check out your first look at the poppy first trailer for Brandon Cronenberg’s “Antiviral”. I’m not sure how exactly to classify this movie. Mystery? Horror? Body horror? It looks like a combination of all those things, plus some clearly arthouse ambitions. The funny thing is? If you’ve seen pictures of writer/director Brandon Cronenberg (son of the famous David), then this is exactly the type of movie you’d think someone who looks like that would end up directing. That’s a compliment. I think.
Syd March is an employee at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. Biological communion – for a price. Syd also supplies illegal samples of these viruses to piracy groups, smuggling them from the clinic in his own body. When he becomes infected with the disease that kills super sensation Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target for collectors and rabid fans. He must unravel the mystery surrounding her death before he suffers the same fate.
Starring Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Douglas Smith, and Malcolm McDowell.
The sinister shenanigans will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month, with a limited released (on the two coasts, no doubt) afterwards.
