I totally agree with you on that note Aaron. It seems to me most american horror flicks or just horror films in general seem to going down this root of gore porn.
Where characters, after facing a bad day at the torture barn, are given justification to exact violence or revenge.Which isn't always the case in real life for that matter anyway. It seems to me that the filmmakers have a love for the visceral films the seventies produced. And in doing so reproduce the same aesthetic or the same storyline but in a different setting.Rather than progress they recede in the name of "the 70's horror was best".So they keep repeating what the old legends achieved at that time. what I believe made those seventies flick great was the political climate at the time and the passion the filmmakers to say them in their stories.I've always felt that the best horror are the ones that raise questions on society, in doing stay relevant.Night of the living dead comes to mind.Maybe not as scary but has ideas without being preachy. These new kids on the block have totally forgotten.Shame really. But there are a few gems waiting to be discovered. I saw an american horror film called "The Lost" at the frightfest film festival. Its the best american horror film I've seen in five years.Yes,it does has flaws but offers great character development and one intense shocking ending. You have to see it.It was shown last year at the festival.I'm so surprised it hasn't been released stateside.Trust me its good.Bug is another one, it did have some lukewarm reviews but I thought it was alright.I think rambled nonsense for too long.Hope its been of help to you on your article.
