In any case, we previously reported that Hayley Atwell, who played Captain America’s gal in the first “Captain America” movie, was sure she wasn’t going to be in the sequel. Or at least, that’s what she said when asked about returning. As it turns out, it’s either a case of Atwell doing what all Marvel actors do, which is lie through their teeth so as not to give away anything, or she wasn’t actually asked back yet at the time of that interview.
But Atwell “confirmed” she wasn’t in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” back in January, and February brings an interview with her “Captain America” co-star Stanley Tucci, who tells Collider this when asked if HE had been contacted about returning in a cameo or flashback sequence for the sequel:
No, they haven’t, unfortunately. I’m really sad. I know that Hayley is going back to do a flashback scene, but I have not been asked.
And he should know, because he’s speaking from personal knowledge, having earlier in the week gone to dinner with Atwell. That must be nice, huh? Going to dinner with Hayley Atwell. Lucky dog.
So there you have it. Atwell’s Peggy Carter is likely returning in a cameo/flashback scene for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, which will take place in the present, with a new love interest for Captain America already set up in “Revenge’s” Emily VanCamp.
It makes sense to bring Peggy Carter back for a cameo, if just to nip that part of the Captain’s romantic past in the bud and let him move on. Here’s hoping they don’t make VanCamp’s character Carter’s niece or granddaughter or something along those lines as has been rumored. I know it works in comic books, but I find it kinda creepy that the Captain was shagging the grandmother/aunt and is now doing the same to the grandfather/niece, but hey, that’s just me, I’m sensitive that way. Just ask anyone.
