Someone has Read the Voltron Script and Says it’s Great!
Or that’s the word from Latino Review, who as usual has gotten their hands on an advance script of the upcoming “Voltron” live-action movie. Yes, a movie based on that show about giant lion robots that can combine to form a big f’in robot, kinda like Transformers, but with swords and, um, giant lion robot parts for limbs. The script in question was written by Justin Marks, who has basically usurped the position once held by David Goyer as the go-to guy for comic book movies. Besides “Voltron”, Marks is currently penning the new “He-Man: Masters of the Universe” movie, as well as Goyer’s own Green Arrow movie, “Supermax”.
Here’s LR’s review of the script, plot descriptions in bold:
What is so damn cool about the script is that it pays homage to both incarnations of the Voltron cartoon — the American and Japanese versions. GOLION came out back in 1981 in Japan, three years later in America. GOLION was considered too hardcore for American audiences so it was edited down into what would be VOLTRON. Wikpedia nailed down the differences of Voltron and Golion in an awesome article and expose of the Voltron phenomenon, check it out.
The script has the tone, edge and dark elements of GOLION.
VOLTRON is a post apocalyptic movie and a fucking awesome one at that too. Just the way it should be because that was the setup of both cartoons. A little bit of ROAD WARRIOR, a little bit INDEPENDENCE DAY, a little bit WAR OF THE WORLDS, a little bit of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, a little bit of THE TERMINATOR, and a little bit of THE MATRIX with some STARGATE thrown in for good measure!
Also, none of the elements that made Voltron corny are in the script — no Nanny, no Hagar, and especially no fucking space mice! In fact, no corniness at all!
Here is the setup: The Drules have invaded Earth and kicked our ass in the ONE DAY WAR. Humanity has gone underground. New York has been decimated and our story opens on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Drule invasion. Think about it, Earth was conquered by an Alien race in 24 hours.
Now I don’t really recall any of that dark post-apocalyptic stuff in the original cartoons. Wasn’t it just about a bunch of humans and their fancy robot lions? I guess not.

Voltron also leaves room for a sequel or trilogy! Awesome! The script is definitely solid enough to launch a trilogy. The Drules are solid villains you love to hate and I would just love to see the battle taken to their home planet like they did in the final episodes of the cartoon.
Sheesh, another wannabe trilogy. I swear, this thing is getting out of hand…

Here’s a scoop for ya, a majority of the Voltron fans on the Official Voltron Message Board (http://forums.voltron.com/groupee) have read the review on LatinoReview and many agree that the new concept for the Voltron Movie sucks.
What we have been told about the script, leaves out important characters, specifically King Zarkon (who’s in charge of the Forces of Planet Doom), Witch Haggar (who split Voltron into 5 lions in the US version of the cartoon) and Zarkon’s son Lotor (who wants to rule in place of his father).
All the main characters have been radically changed beyond the “mondernization” that Hollywood has adopted as its standard operating, proceedure to the point where the movie isn’t even recognizable as Voltron.
If anyone wants to see the non-paid-for-reviews of those who will be shelling out the $6-$12 to see this movie, checkout the official Voltron message boards and look for the “Voltron Script” thread.

My fear is that they’ll reduce our favorite 80’s Anime cartoon to a Power-Rangers-quagmire that will turn off fans all over! It’s going to take A LOT of work to pull this one off! They’ll need ALL the key characters, and I would LOVE to see (or hear) Peter Cullen have a significant role on this movie since he was responsible for the opening narration, among other parts in Voltron.
I DO need to add that I had seen clips of the original GoLion Japanese Anime from the early 1980’s, before it hit America, and it didn’t seem anything like what was described above. It DID have a slightly dark tone to it, but had the Space Mice, it did have Hagar, etc.
Let us all hope that Justin Marks does it justice!
I don’t understand why the 20 people on the voltron forum would complain about this movie being made. What New voltron ANYTHING has come out in the last 20 years? If anything has come out, i defeintly have not heard anything about it and I bet a very small amount of people would know about it. This movie could revolutionize Voltron and bring this classic cartoon back from the dead. Why would fanatics be pissed about that, you would figure they’d be salvating at anything they could get their hands on. Maybe they need another 20 years or so to be able to handle the idea that voltron is coming out on the big screen.
I can’t believe that Lotor won’t be in the movie! He was my favortie!

Fans who open their arms, jump up and down, and are satisfied with ANYTHING that comes out featuring their favorite characters, shows, etc are one of the leading causes for crappy movies, shows, adaptations etc that studios put out.
The reason why we Voltron fans were not pleased with Justin Marks’ script is because it’s not Voltron. It’s nothing more than a rehash of previous sci-fi movies with Voltron characters. Why should we be pleased with that? Just because it has Voltron’s name on it? Not a good enough reason. Image and Devil’s Due released Voltron comics in 2004-2005. In the beginning they were great and took Voltron in a new direction that made sense, was updated and wasn’t kiddie. Unfortunately, DDP was more concerned with their various G.I.Joe and Transformers comics to really care about Voltron.
Just look at Superman Returns. Many people, including myself, went to see it because it was Superman and frankly, I don’t think that movie did the franchise justice. The new Batman movies on the other hand, are a good example of how new adaptations work.
Now, you’re entitled to your opinion on whether or not you would like the script that Justin Marks came up with. But the fact remains that Justin Marks didn’t write a Voltron script. Infact, I’m not sure what to catalogue it as other than junk. We fans want Voltron on the big screen, but we want something respectable that will revive Voltron, not something that will make people regret that they spent the money to watch it. The team behind the Transformers movie listened to what the fans had to say and changed certain things (including getting Peter Cullen to voice Prime) and that had a significant effect on the movie’s success.

if you hand me shit and say it’s a burger, it’s still SHIT. I would remind all that it’s fanatic’s that keep most of these concepts alive, not regular guy like you or me.
Movies like IRONMAN,kept the core elements we all loved, then add little things of their own.
If Prince Lotor is not in the movie, I refuse to see it. How could they leave out the subject of many a 80’s adolescent girls fantasy!
Regarding what KiethBlackLion said about Transformers,
the product team in fact did NOT listen to fans, especially not the director, who was quoted saying he didn’t even like transformers. It had great action but a confusing story. I thought it was about the robots, instead I’m watching a flix about a kid trying to get some play with a bunch of PIPECLEANERS running round the background.
