Someone Not Named Brad Pitt has Nabbed Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes 2

Or that’s the word from Latino Review, who quotes “solid” sources as saying that “Mad Men” actor Jared Harris has landed the role of Sherlock Holmes arch-nemesis Moriarty in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming “Sherlock Holmes 2″.

Besides “Mad Men”, English bloke Jared Harris has been in “Fringe” and is scheduled to appear in John Carpenter’s “The Ward” later this year. He’s also the son of Richard Harris.

Apparently Harris won the role after Brad Pitt and Daniel Day-Lewis, the two top choices for the role, both passed. Hey, you gotta take’em as you get’em, right?

“Sherlock Holmes 2″ will return Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as his Dr. Watson. Harris joins the sequel along with Noomi Rapace as the love interest and Stephen Fry as Holmes’ brother Mycroft.

One of my favorite “Star Trek” episodes, featuring a Holodeck Moriarty (played by that guy from “The Nanny”!!!):

I really don’t think that Brad Pitt would have been a good Moriarty to Downey’s Holmes. Pitt is a great actor, he just lacks that upper crusty, silver spoon, better than you quality that I always imagined Moriarty to have. While both Pitt and Day lewis (two of my favorites) are terrific actors, I’m glad that they decided to go with a lesser known. The only part that I don’t like is that when the film hits theaters and Moriarty is revealed for the first time there won’t be that “WOW!” factor.
