Looks like Guillermo del Toro’s monster movie mash “Pacific Rim” is moving along swimmingly, with news that Charlie Hunnam, star of the FX Channel’s biker drama “Sons of Anarchy” is currently in negotiations to play the male lead in the big-budget sci-fi epic. For some SPOILERIFIC plot details on “Pacific Rim”, head over here.
The story sees powerful extraterrestrial aliens threaten the Earth’s existence, attacking cities and nations neighboring the Pacific Ocean. To meet the threat head-on, humanity develops giant robots to fight them off. The movie is influenced by mecha, the Japanese genre involving humans piloting robotic constructs.
Hunnam would play “a pilot of one of the mechas that needs to climb back into the driver’s chair”, but first he’ll have to get over a past trauma that’s kept him on the sidelines. It’s your typical hero journey — hero suffers setback, must learn to regain his confidence and save the world from giant invading monsters. You know, that old stuff.
Besides “Anarchy” on TV, Hunnam can currently be seen in the indie thriller “The Ledge”.
