Sony and Raimi Can’t Decide on a Spidey Villain

As much as they like the idea of Sam Raimi returning to direct the fourth (and possibly fifth) installment of their mega franchise “Spider-Man”, Sony is apparently a little weary of the director’s choice of villains for the fourth movie. According to the trades, while Raimi would like the Vulture to be Spider-Man’s latest villain, Sony is thinking more of The Black Cat as a villain and potential love interest. As a result, the film may be knocked from its expected May 11, 2011 release date.

Word is, the source of the conflict stems from the last “Spider-Man” movie, which, let’s face it, wasn’t exactly the franchise’s high point. Its many problems have been documented here and elsewhere, so I won’t get into it again. The problem, apparently, was that Raimi wanted to use the Vulture in conjunction with Sandman back on the third part, but the studio pushed him to swap the old winged geezer with Venom instead. Now that he’s back for part four, Raimi is once again pushing to get the Vulture in the movie, while Sony isn’t so sure. The amusing thing about Raimi wanting the Vulture for “Spider-Man 3″ is that, well, it probably wouldn’t have mattered. The movie would still have had one villain too many.

So what’s the solution? Whatever it is, they better come up with it quick, because production on “Spider-Man 4″ was scheduled to commence this summer. Of course, it’s just a script issue, and as soon as Raimi and Sony agree on a villain (or two), it wouldn’t take a writer too long to bang out an appropriate script to get the film ready for a summer start date. Some high-profile names have already worked on various drafts of the script, from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to Gary Ross. There has to be something there worth filming by summer.

So who is right here? Does Raimi wanting The Vulture sound better than Sony wanting the Black Cat? I guess we’ll find out when “Spider-Man 4″ lands in 2011. Maybe.

Really? An old geezer with wings or me? This is, like, a hard choice?

Hmm. Let’s see, if the producers looked at one single message board…they’d realize the fans want the Lizard. Love interests?? Who cares, that’s one of the things that ruined part 3. They need to toughen up Peter Parker, give him some testicles, and not focus the whole film on Mary Jane.

Definitely got enough on his plate woman wise. Lets just throw the Lizard in and call it a day.

This is the problem with Hollywood these days. There formula for a movie isn’t always what we want. They think that all these movies need a romantic angle. No, we want to see the story progress as it should instead of adding all these other moving pieces.

People keep saying that Spider-Man 3 had too many villains, too many villains was not the problem. It was the wrong choice of villains and the horrible depiction of Venom. Venom should have been intro’d with a cliffhanger at the end of SM3 to set him up for SM4.It’s really sad that Sony can’t get it together when everything is already layed out for them. First of Black Cat is NOT a villain per-say she is more of a roguish anti-villain although with villianess attributes. Raimi has yet to show Peter Parker’s ingenuity. Peter Parker is a young genius not anywhere as smart as Reed Richards but he is very smart. The Best way to go at this point would be The Lizard and Kraven the Hunter with “Kraven’s Last Hunt”/ “Burried Alive” story base. Raimi needs to start using his horror skills so The Lizard would be very scary and Kraven can have that kind of “Voodoo type” of scaryness but yet not totally horror. In SM 4, Mary Jane needs to be away in working on her career so that they can develop more of a relationship with Pete and Gwen. SM 5 needs to be a “Maximum Carnage” and “The Return Of Venom” with the death of Gwen Stacey at the hands of Carnage causing Venom to feel guilty about Gwen’s death and ultimately teaming with Spidey to deafeat Carnage but dies at the end. SM 6 needs to be about the Sinister Six. a build up of the backstories of the Sinister Six can be put in SM 4 & 5 to build up to SM 6 and that’s were the Vulture should show up. Black Cat would be a great reluctant ally for Spidey in SM 4. And “The Prowler” definitely needs to be Spidey’s ally in SM6.

DUDe you have great ideas, but most of that is too much for a 2 hour movie. Sinister 6 would be awesome except that they’ve killed off two major members. The roster would have to have lizard, kraven, electro, vulture, mysterio, and scorpion to be somewhat decent. And it’d only make sense of you introduced some of them in earlier films and now they’re ganging up on him, as you’ve said. BUT I don’t think they’re gonna go with half of those villains. Also, they need to spotlight Spidey’s wittiness, and his abilities, hence the throw away villains like Rhino and Shocker I have mentioned. As for The love triangle, they have already focussed too much on his love life. I’m tired of watching him pine after MJ, or realize he’s crushing on Gwen. I thought putting her in the last film was so bad because they didn’t do her justice. As of right now my favorite version of Spidey is “The SPectacular Spiderman” cartoon on Disney XD.
And finally I hated what they did with Venom. I liked the look, but the characterization was bad, and I agree it should’ve been the cliffhanger with SPidey 4 being all about Venom. But alas it didn’t happen. And I think continuing on with the symbiotes is a bad idea. Carnage was popular in the 90′s but fell off the radar so much he was killed in “New Avengers” first issue. He’d pretty much ruin the films if you ask me.
Stick with the classics, update them and make them deadly. Doctor OCtopus was awesome in Spidey 2. Do something similar with Mysterio, Electro, Vulture (Use his more modern look and black and red color scheme), Kraven (make him an extreme hunter type or something), and make the Scorpion badass, and make sure you throw in that the suit was funded by JJJ. Having too many villains takes away time from building their characters. And building them too quickly makes people not really care. I dunno. I’ve lost faith in Raimi’s portrayal of Spidey. Not enough quipping and way too much angst and whining.

I heard a rumor about Mysterio and him possibly being played by Bruce Cambell. I think that would be fairly cool. BUT I agree more with wanting to see Kurt Conners become the Lizard. The Kraven Buried Alive storyline IS one of (if not THE) best Spidey stories ever written, but I think Hollywood would screw it up. Vulture has always been LAME, so let it drop Sam.
