Starz Makes it Official: Spartacus Recasting is Under Way

We here at BeyondHollywood.com love us some “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”. Mostly it’s because of the blood, and the sand, and the sex. Hey, that’s just how we roll.

Previously, we’ve chronicled “Spartacus” star Andy Whitfield’s battle with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his recovery, and subsequent backward slide. We also floated the possibility that the network might be considering either recasting the title role of Spartacus, or going with a new, central character.

It’s now official: Starz will recast Spartacus.

If you’re interested in replacing Whitfield, Starz is looking for “a Caucasian male in his mid to late 30s to play the ‘smart, intense, passionate title role. Interested parties must have an authentic British accent and be prepared to sign a three-year contract.’

Starz is currently at work on a “Spartacus” prequel mini-series called “Gods of the Arena”, which was intended as a holdover until Whitfield could return to shoot Season Two. The second season of “Spartacus” is expected to shoot as soon as production on the mini-series wraps, though that might be delayed a tad now that the network is in search of a new Spartacus.
