Summit Checks into Area 52

Area 52 Comic BookOriginally announced way back in 2007 with Steven C. Miller directing, Benderspink has now found a studio home for their upcoming live-action adaptation of the comic book “Area 52” by Brian Haberlin. No word if Miller is still attached to direct, though 4 years later, that’s unlikely.

The latest news on the sci-fi monster project is that Summit Entertainment has come onboard, with the film scheduled to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (of “Transformers” fame) along with the prolific Benderspink boys, who have been behind, as far as I can tell, every other comic book property currently being set up in Hollywood. Or at least, it seems that way.

The film’s premise is familiar to fans of the Syfy Channel’s “Warehouse 13”:

The comic focused on a top secret warehouse in Antarctica called Area 52, a government storage dump for otherworldly discoveries, manned by a ragtag group of misfits who have been exiled to the middle of nowhere to staff it. When an alien killing machine is accidentally hatched in this repository, the group must band together and use the stored mythological weapons and artifacts to save themselves and the world.

Of course, Haberlin created the comic way back in 2001, and “Warehouse 13” didn’t surface until a few years ago, so there you go. Plus, “Warehouse 13” doesn’t have aliens, but yeah, it’s kinda the same thing. Maybe they can get Joanne Kelly to star…
