On Friday, the Wall Street Journal ran an article that featured an interview with Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov, in which the Prez talked about his studio’s past, present, and future projects. One of the topics that came up was “Superman Returns”, and the WB’s hopes for it back in 2006 when the film was made and released. Robinov then goes on to say what we’ve already reported here, that Warner Bros. plans to go the “Batman Begins” route with Supes — that is, they are going to relaunch it, and pretend like Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” never happen.

But don’t take my word for it — here’s the Big Man on Campus himself to the WSJ:

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes — known as “Batman vs. Superman” — after the $215 million “Superman Returns,” which had disappointing box-office returns, didn’t please executives. “‘Superman’ didn’t quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to,” says Mr. Robinov. “It didn’t position the character the way he needed to be positioned.” “Had ‘Superman’ worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009,” he adds. “But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all.”

Shelving the “Batman vs. Superman” movie is a good idea. The only way to pit Superman against Batman is to do Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” — that is the ULTIMATE Superman vs. Batman story. Everything else is chop liver.

In any case, yeah, Warner Bros. is going to reboot Superman. AGAIN.

So what does this mean for Singer’s planned “The Man of Steel”? Um, not so good?
