There is a new teaser making the rounds for Wong Kar Wai’s (“Chungking Express”, “Fallen Angels”, and a bunch of other great films) new martial arts movie, “The Grandmasters”. Just a heads up, this doesn’t actually contain any footage from the film, and, unless you speak Chinese, doesn’t impart any new knowledge about the plot, story, or characters. If none of this poses a problem for you, by all means, take a look.
In “The Grandmasters” Tony Leung (“Hard Boiled”) reunites with his “In the Mood for Love” director, to tell the story of legendary martial arts instructor, and general badass, Ip Man, who famously taught Bruce Lee. As you probably know Ip Man has been the subject of a pair of recent films, “Ip Man” and “Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster”, which star Donnie Yen, and are both excellent movies in their own right. So, you may be inclined to ask, does the world need another biopic about a deceased master of wing-chun? I’m going to go ahead and say, yes, yes it does. Not only do I have faith in Wong Kar Wei and Tony Leung, but “The Grandmasters” is reportedly taking a different approach to Ip’s life, and is going to be a “Batman Begins” style origin story, so ideally, it won’t be the same story that’s already been told. Also, Yuen Woo Ping is handling all of the action, which is an added bonus.
Here is the teaser trailer for “The Grandmasters”.
