Comedy and intelligent are not exactly synonymous, or at least not anymore. The era of sex /gross-out comedies and parodies is here, and it seems that any truly funny movie you can show to your friends or family and still feel cultured and intelligent is just a dream. Judd Apatow and his crew are doing a lot of good for the comedy world, with surprisingly sharp writing and even gaining critical acclaim (something almost unheard of with sex comedies), but can their films really be considered classy and smart? Well there’s good news. You can be pretentious and elegant but still have your laughs at the same time.

Here are the top ten films (in no particular order; we’re on the internet, I don’t want to start any trouble here) that prove this to be true…

What about some “teen comedy” +”intelligent” movies starring females in leading roles? I’d seriously love to see some of those listed. Some witty and clever young female lead characters with comedic timing. Juno, for instance.

It seems that most teen comedies have ugly guys as the lead characters goofing off & trying to get “THAT hot chick that every guy wants” who is completely out of their league (yet typically falls for the ugly guy anyway). The male fantasy – only a male director and writer could come up with so many versions of that laudibly unrealistic story line – and only a male producer would dish out the bucks to produce it again and again. Men can identify with the plain, goofy “boy next door boy” but they forget that girls want someone WE can identify with: and it is not that hot, mean, 2-Dimensional ‘babe’ of teen comedies. The role of females in too many teen comedies is just to be “that hot chick”, a girl who I can’t personally relate to.

Sorry for the rant. Anyway, I am thrilled to see a list (albeit short, and lacking films with leading actresses) about INTELLIGENT comedies.

Most of these movies actually fall into the category of what I consider “frat boy/too silly” humor and not “intelligent comedy. Intelligent comedy does seem to be lacking these days. There’s no class or subtlety these days. Everything is obvious and mostly junior high humor. Make ugly noises with body parts, hit or accidentally grope someone in a private area, or say something normal and make it sound dirty to get sniggering base laughs.

Intelligent comedy should engage your brain not just your funny bone.

So, Airplane or Monty Python are not intelligent? Why don’t YOU give some examples of movies that are not “frat boy” humor? Maybe “sorority girl” humor, if it does exist. How about making a list of movies done by ladies who are actually funny? Let me start you off: 1. Sleepless in Seattle… no… wait… that’s a romantic comedy… OK, I give up, I’m at a loss… Please DO make a list of movies that are not “frat boy” humor in your humble opinion and that are actually funny. I would particularly like to see the ones that are made by women. Please, let me know if you do.

nice list. I don’t really consider American Psycho a comedy, but I guess if you think about it like that, then it really is a good movie.

Surely the Burn after reading, men who stare at goats, looking for eric are all modern intelligent comedies?!
