The folks behind the upcoming “Terminator” reboot have found their director in “Thor: The Dark World’s” Alan Taylor, so now the rush is on to fill out their cast. The film is expected to be the first of an all-new trilogy, because gosh, why concentrate all your efforts on making one really, really GREAT movie first, when you can go ahead and announce a trilogy years in advance?
According to THR, actresses Emilia Clarke, Brie Larson, and Margot Robbie are being tested for the role of a young Sarah Connor in the upcoming reboot, which is expected to be a standalone series, but apparently one that still somehow involves Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator sent back in time.
See, it’s a reboot, but not really a reboot, but it definitely/sorta/kinda ignores the previous four movies. Maybe. Confused? Don’t be. Just accept that they’re making this thing all over again because there is money to be made. Honestly, folks, there is no art here.
In any case, Sarah Connor is, of course, the very pivotal role originally played by Linda Hamilton in the two James Cameron “Terminator” films. She was later played by Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”) in the TV show “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”, which focused almost as much on Mama Connor as it did on her offspring, future human resistance leader John Connor (played by Thomas Dekker as a teen in the TV show, and later by Christian Bale as an adult in the most recent “Terminator Salvation”).
Emilia Clarke, of course, is most known for her role on HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, which means if she nabs the role, there will be two “Game of Thrones” actresses who have now played Sarah Connor.
Brie Larson was the female lead in the “21 Jump Street” movie, but has gotten a lot of recognition for the indie drama “Short Term 12”.
And finally, Margot Robbie is an Aussie, and is the female lead in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
Also expect familiar characters in this latest incarnation, with Taylor and the producers also on the lookout for actors to play Kyle Reese, a freedom fighter from the future who travels back in time to protect a young Sarah Connor. Apparently “Tron: Legacy’s” Garrett Hedlund is on the shortlist for the role.
A young John Connor will also appear in the movie, though it’s unclear how big this role is. As you’ll recall, John Connor was a mythical background character in the first and second movie, and grew up into Nick Stahl in “Terminator: Rise of the Machines”, before Bale took over in the aforementioned “Terminator Salvation”.
